X1800XT 256MB vs 512MB

I need help on this one.

I'm planning to upgrade my graphics card (X800XL just doesn't cut it anymore), and I've been planning to get 1900XT, but then I came across X1800XT with 256MB of memory. It's on sale and is priced almost equally with X1800XL (380? vs 350?) on my local shop. There is no point going with X1800XT with 512 MB of memory, since I could have X1900XT at the same price.

The question is, that will the X1800XT take a hit in performance while having "only" 256MB of memory? Because I could have that card as with the same price of X1800XL, and I'm looking for an graphics upgrade that would last an year until Vista is starting to come out (I'm planning to upgrade my whole rig in 2007). I see no point going with X1800XL, since the performance compared to X800XL isn't that big, but the X1800XT 256MB with similar price would be 200? cheaper than the X1900XT. so would it be a good upgrade?

I'm currently playing mostly BF2 and BF2:SF, CS:S, DoD:S and AOE3, but also games like WoW and Civ4. Especially with BF2 it would be nice to have more power with my video card.

My other specs are:

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
A64 3500+ Winchester @ 2.6GHz
2GB of Ram
Antec TPII 550W

thanks.

If you can wait, there's supposed to be a lower cost X1900 card coming next month.

If you're buying a high-end card it's definitely worthwhile to get a 512 MB version if you can afford it. A lot of newer games love the extra VRAM.

needed some editing in this post!! am replying to the prices u posted so plz i dont want anyone to say tht 18xt is 300 now and for the 18GTO some ppl will say 256bit but in fact anyone who is gonna buy a card like this will use it in a res like 1024x768 or close to it so it wont matter if 256 will be better for higher res

i'm gunna wait until they come out with a 1GB 7300 and buy it for you just to shut you up ;)

EDIT: i actually agree with you this time, FWIW, but if the price difference is enough i'd jump on the 256mb card if i was strapped for cash, it's still a beast ;)

X1800XT 256mb is certainly worth it over X1800XL. The performance hit will be there but it's not tremendous. If for you the 512mb version is much more expensive, go with the 256mb one. Have you considered getting a 7900GT card and overclocking it?

There's why you might consider the 512MB version. I think games are just going to use more and more memory since 256MB is pretty much standard now from the low to the high end gaming cards. Look around the FS/FT forums for a used X1800XT 512MB. I'm loving mine.

Usually in resolutions like 1024x768 for example, there;s no real benefit to justify it's 512MB version price tag, unless if you are a high definition player, it is just hard to justify, period.
