I still don't understand why anyone would buy a subpar card when for $25 CHEAPER they could have a GTX.

i bet in one month it will be 350-400 just like the 7800GT.
i would hope, especially as an oem. so this will carry ati's new 1 year warranty i guess :(

There are Chevy fans, Ford fans, Nissan fans, Honda fans, etc.

Why is it such a big deal that there are ATI or NV fans, or Intel or AMD fans?

What is with the trashing of folks who buy ATI cards, or Intel chips, or whatever?

Let folks buy what they like.

Subpar is in the eye of the beholder anyway, and ATI has it's advantages.

i wasn't calling anything sub par, just that its the first pre-order i've seen.

and frankly, i'm a bit shocked at monarch wanting to charge people $67.35 if they cancel their pre-order. wtf is that?

Good business sense, IMO. Aside from a few people, the general opinion is: other than the paper launched X1800XT, all other X1* cards are sub-par to lower priced NVidia products already shipping. The buyer's remorse on this bad boy is likely to be huge. The last thing Monarch wants is to order a truckload of cards from ATI, then be stuck with an inventory of cards which are dropping in price like a rock.

I'm very impressed by the tech&business savvy of the Monarch guys for this move.

i ccan certainly understand them not wanting to carry a truckload of these but couldn't they throw a couple dozen in stock without the 15% "restocking" charge?

i mean, just list it at pre-order, first come first serve as they always do.

thats certainly not TRUE since the XT, amidst all disappointment for sure is NOT sub-par to the GTX. Actually, the XT OVERALL is the slightly better/faster card and i think everyone ever doubted that.

But then we could also have a lengthy debate about IQ and what priority, like D3D or OpenGL ? Anyway....there is really no SUBPAR card nor one which is CLEARLY better in all circumstances.

I personally WOULD go with the XT if it would be only $25 more than the GTX.

ANd btw. i am pretty disappointed by the real life reviews of this card - and i dont say "i'd rather spend $25 and go ATI" because i am some fanboy :)

But:
Still its too prizey, comes years too late and is far of my personal expectations.

When the 7800GTX/GT were first out, they were not well under MSRP either. Given some time, the XL price will drop into place as well. Hopefully.

i think he's referring to the gtx vs the card in the OP, the xl. although i dunno where he's getting the $25 cheaper. i see it for ~5 cheaper AR. ($469-25= 444)

still a no brainer imo.

No one said ATi cards are sub-par in general, just that, when compared to a GTX at the same price, the XL is in no way worth getting. It's less than a no-brainer...the XL loses to its direct competitor, the GT, yet is more expensive than the GTX; who would buy an obviously slower card at a higher price?

7800gts can be had for ~310ar. thats a long drop.

Therein being the really *BIG* problem for ATI. The initial time when your hardware is top of the world is the time you can command the really fat margins. That's where your partners make the big bucks by marking up your product sky high. That's why the fastest CPUs sell for $800+, while models only 20-30% slower cost $150.

Arguably better hardware on top of not being available -- everyone expects the prices for THAT offering to crash earthward fast, and not even hotheads will buy at MSRP.

ATI missed this holiday season, bigtime. System integrators won't risk waiting another month to develop products based on the XT, and benchmarks show it equivalent to the Nvidia offerings available now. Offerings which can be SLId for undisputed best performance.

I know plenty of people, myself included, who managed to put off hardware purchasing to wait for the next great ATI thing. Simply competitive and allegedly available another month from now isn't going to cut it. 7800 it is, which means I (and 3, possibly 4 others I can think of in the same boat) won't be in the market for any ATI offerings for at least another 1+ years.
