X1800 XT F.E.A.R. performance lead due to extra 256MBs of RAM?

So has anyone determined whether or not the X1800 XT performance lead in F.E.A.R. is due to the card having 512MBs or memory?

I'd like to know before I go out and buy another 256MB 7800 GTX.

I kinda doubt it since it makes heavy use of shaders, which is likely what is limiting performance... the GPU's ability to process those shaders. Based on the demo, I don't see any extremely high resolution textures or extremely detailed models. I could be wrong though, that's just my guess.

Right now all AT had to say was optimizations for Nvidia were not performed yet and thus comparisons arent worth it. Obviously with a sometimes 100% lead in FEAR I think there is definately something wrong.

If you are worried about it wait for the game to come out before making a decision.

No, it seems to be because of heavy use of dynamic branching. U3 does the same.

The developer says the retail version will run very differently from the demo (I assume faster). So you need to wait for the game before judging.

I've heard that FEAR has leaked. I'm at work and have no way to verify that claim.

If its true, we might know whether they optimised it or not before it is even released.

But what happens when they mean that ATi will get a bigger performance lead

J/k :p

How does a X1800XL perform compared to a 7800GT? They both have the same speed and amount of RAM (500MHz DDR, 256MB), as well as very similar fillrate figures, so that's your best bet for judging architecture performance with this demo. But, as others have said, supposedly the retail version will show nVidia doing better than they are in the demo version, so don't draw any firm conclusions from demo benchmarks.

I think the extra memory plays a big part; IIRC when they tried a 512 MB X800 XL it did quite well, especially in high detail settings.

F.E.A.R is OCt 17th :)
Quake4 is OCt 18th :D

Monolith have been working with Nvidia and doing some optimisation to the 7 series and maybe the 6 series. I would wait for the real version.

I don't think the benefit is due to the extra RAM at all. I think the improvement is primarily from:

a.) faster shader performance (where the ATI clockspeed benefit helps)
b.) more memory bandwidth (because the RAM is at 1.5 Ghz, vs 1.2 Ghz on the GTX).

Maybe its the insane clock speeds of the X1800.
I wander what an 600/1400 the oringinal clock speed XT faired aginst the GTX.

Thats what I am doing with AOE 3. I have it pre-ordered but have been, um, sampling the full version for the last few days.
