Are they designed to run this hot? I can't believe that a card that runs so hot is utilizing such a little piss ant fan single slot cooler. There has to be something wrong with the temps sensors in these things. or a driver bug. No way would they last very long at those temps. Hence the 2 year reduction in warranty by ATI perhaps? SOB's if thats the case. I take it back if its just a driver issue.

ATi will have to revise their reference cooling, as they did during the last generation. The Radeon X850 series is the example.

They'll have to rely on Sapphire and other companies to produce slightly different, or very different cooling methods, during the first weeks or months of release.

But ATi themselves will surely re-do things officially, and thus create a new series, such as X1850 XT (maybe XT PE once again), for example.

I myself am waiting for the X1800 XT 512 MB in November. But I'll wait to see if Sapphire or another company will try something "un-referenced", if I may say.

This stuff is a bit scary when coupled with ATI's new 1 year warranty (down from 3 years) on R520 products

well like keys said, i think, or at least hope, its a sensor or driver issue.

as for the warranty, just don't buy bbati. powercolor et al are still offering reasonable warrantys (more than a year) last i saw.

That sounds like a good plan. ;)

I have to think it is a bug as well in the reporting...One guy I saw that had the core cranked up with the memory was getting in the 70c load after the AS had cured a bit...I bet his idles were in the 50's.....Chances are that most of these reported temp problems with the same manufacturer of the board??? IE like a powercolor or sapphire???

We all knew they would be hot but I was thinking idfle in the high 50's low 60s at stock and maybe touch 80's at load for long periods....

Too bad the Powercolor ones are not available for sale

That sounds like my X800XL (load temps anyway) before I changed the cooler on it . . . actually mid 80s are load isn't that bad at all consider the clock speeds on that thing and that tiny little cooler . . . as I just said, even my X800XL stock gets temps similar to that . . .

Bought an X1800XL card an will be returning it, probably in favor of a 7800GT.

Idle temp at 87-90C, hit 97C after about 30min of Fear. Fan runs at max speed basically all the time and can barely hear myself think.

Yes, im greatly dissapointed

I'd be more inclined to believe it's a bug with the drivers reporting incorrect temps.

Could be a bug yes.
But I havent seen any official comment regarding this from Ati or any other vendor.

Oh, I should add this aswell. I created a support ticket on ATI support page asking about these temperatures and here's theirs response:

The card is running hot. I would recomend exchanging it at your point of purchase. (10/27/2005 4:28 PM EDT)

Ouch. Idle at 90?
That's.. Well.. Bloody hot.

To be honest, I've never beeen impressed with stick coolers on anything, and this just throws me into the "eh.. they're crap"

Although.. There was a liquid metal cooled card.. and I think Powercolor released a card with a WC cooling solution.. Other than those. Stocck coolers tend to be.. Well. Crap. In my experiance anyway.

I find 90C idle hard to believe.

I think it is safe to say they run way too hot, for sure. 90C sounds more like under load, not idle. Although that would probably put idle temps around 70-75C which is ridiculous.

Nah it is a bug, If you put a sensor on it the core the temp is around 45C Idle and goes up to 70C at full load, seems as if the sensor in the bios is misreporting info.

I agree, I have very serious doubts that any card could idle at 90C and last longer than a few weeks.

Although when I was running Lost Coast last night on my 6800GT, as far as I could tell (quickly switching out from the game to the driver panel) it peaked at 90C load...and my idle temp is usually somewhere around 60C. Not sure why the difference was so large...

Yeah the 6800 series run pretty hot.

I've been thrilled with how cool my 7800GT runs, overclocked considerably, and with stock cooling. About 37-39C idle and 55 full load.

None would be more happy than me if this was indeed a bug that could be solved with a bios or driver update.
But what I need is someone saying yes, we have something on its way to fix this.
And Gecube which is the vendor of this card has no technical channel whatsoever.
