Well, the X1800XL is a lower clocked version of the X1800XT, which is on par (but cheaper) than the 7900GT.

The 7900GT would probably be faster. If they're the same price obviously go for the 7900. If you can have the X1800XL a lot cheaper then go for that. I'm very happy with mine.

X1800XL compares to a 7800GT more than a 7900GT ... 7900GT = 7800GTX which compares to a X1800XT

therefore 7900GT > X1800XL

7900GT FTW! Especially if you volt mod it. There's a tutorial here for it. I'll post a link in a little bit. Now, I gotta go to bed.

The direct compare for the 7900 GT is the AIW X1900, which basically is the "XL" version of the X1900 series, without the XL letters themselves. The X1800 XL doesn't have the extra pixel shaders, and the AIW X1900 got them. Not to mention that a decently over-clocked (+40 Mhz Core & +40 Mhz Memory, minimum, which can be achieved extremely easily (we all know ATi's X1800/X1900 series are over-clocking beasts in general) AIW X1900 will actually be better than a stock-speed 7900 GT anyday.

I know however that a decently OC'ed 7900 GT offers superb performance, and with its price getting more affordable almost on a per-month basis, makes it an excellent choice still.

1800XT and 7900GT are priced around the same, get the former. don't get X1800XL unless it is priced much cheaper and you plan to do serious overclocking.

You may want to go with the 7900 GT if you actually want to play B&W 2. I don't know if ATI ever worked out the driver problems with that game. (edit: on second thought it was a problem with the game itself, anyway ati cards had reduced performance in that)

Other than that, the 1800 XT and 7900 GT are about equal. Please don't consider the XL. :p

A 7900GT manhandles the X1800XL.

A 7800GT edges out the X1800XL. This product therefore was unsuccessful due to the fact it couldnt beat the 7800GT in various benchs.
