I'm just curious.

I'd like to know ...

1) Are you using ATi's reference air cooling ? If not, which one ?
2) What are your GPU Idle & Load temperatures ?
3) Have you tried to over-clock Core and/or Memory frequencies ? If so, at which frequencies ? And is it stable ?
4) Have you done one or more benchmarks using Future Mark's 3DMark01/03/05 ? Which drivers are you using ? And if so, could you please post your compare link ?
5) How's your PC Case/Tower ? How many fans ? Is it air-cooled or water-cooled ?
6) Which brand is it ? Built By ATi ? Powercolor ? Sapphire ? HIS ? Another brand ?

In my case ...

1) Yes, ATi reference air cooling, for now.

2) Idles between 48ºC to 50ºC, and between 65ºC to 75ºC at load (although 70ºC+ is extremely rare, it usually happens when playing a game with HDR enabled, Anti-Aliasing at 4x or 6x, and Anisotropic-Filtering at 8x or 16x, with all in-game settings at their highest, I saw such temperatures right after I quit playing games like Day Of Defeat: Source, Doom 3 or Age Of Empires III, for example). The mentioned temperatures are according to ATi Tool 0.25 Beta 10. Using custom-set fan speeds according to specified temperatures.

3) Yes. Currently at 550 Mhz Core, 550 Mhz Memory, at temperatures mentioned above. No artifacts. 100% stable in games and benchmarks. I might take a look for a better cooling solution before trying any higher frequencies, to simply avoid taking risks. I like the over-clocking potential of it so far, and I'm certain I could go higher on the Core especially.

4) Yes, with ATi Catalyst 5.11. Only in 3DMark05 so far, here's the link: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1508541

5) A simple, generic Case. With reference AMD's Heatsink/Fan (of course), PSU's fan, and one seperate Case fan. There is no front in-take fan. I'm currently thinking about getting a new Case. The one I'm using is at least 2 years-old, and a change is due.

6) Built By ATi

If you'd like to add "points" other than the subjects concerned by #1 to #6, than please do so.

I'm posting this to get some more information and get X1800 XL's consumers' pulse. How it peforms, how stable is it, in which conditions is it being used. Etc.

And perhaps it might provide information to potential buyers.

I just installed mine about an hour ago, I've not benched or anything yet, just checking to make sure everything is installed properly after the initial driver install.

Update:

1) ATI stock cooler
2) 57/69 (about 5C warmer at idle than the X800XL it replaced)
3) CPU and GPU are stock clocked
4) 3DMark 1/3/5 20k/13k/6.9k Beta Drivers No compare link
5) Warm case loaded with hardrives and multiple tuners. Air cooled.
6) BBA

*I'd say the fan at load is definately louder than the X800XL and the loudest fan in the case, and very quiet when not. If I keep it in this rig, I'll probably want a VGA Silencer type cooler or better case cooling at least.

*Its a long, heavy card probably as long as my 6800 was.
*I had no driver installation issues or conflicts. It adds the Rage Theater VIVO chip to the existing Theater 200 chips on HDTV Wonder analog and eHome Wonder, Theater 550 on the Sapphire Theatrix and the digital NXT2004 chip all installed on the same rig...impressive!

I'm going to get to some video testing.

im a big fan of DOD Source I usually play on the SS or Kustom Kettle servers. what type of fps do you get with that system? what core is that AMD? what are your settings? Resolution? ingame settings? desktop video driver settings? Refreshrates ingame? what resolution do you play at? what are your lowest fps's.... sry 4 all the questions but im in route to upgradeland and so far my 939 AMD 3500+ winchester core has been sitting a yr waiting for me to build it a system :D

thanks Z

BTRY B 529th FA BN, to answer you about Day Of Defeat: Source:

Usually 50 frames-per-second and above, rarely drops below 40.
My AMD processor is shown in my signature. ;)
In-game resolution is 1280 x 960, at 100 Hz Refresh Rate. Desktop is at 1024 x 768, 100 Hz.
Drivers are Catalyst 5.11, as mentioned in my first post.

Lowest frames-per-second I've noticed so far was in Day Of Defeat: Source, around 30 f-p-s if I recall correctly, and I had 6x QAAA and 16x HQAF. At resolutions from 1280 x 1024 and above it starts to drop quite noticeably. But as long as I stay within 1280 x 960, it plays smooth in pretty much any games. Only exception so far is F.E.A.R., which is the only game to "tax" my card so far. And I believe the X1800 XT does perform better in F.E.A.R., but not by a large margin.

In Day Of Defeat: Source, the in-game settings are: All settings at their highest, including Full HDR enabled. Using 4x Quality Adaptive Anti-Aliasing, and 16x High Quality Anisotropic-Filterting. The Textures and Mipmap details level is set at High Quality from the Control Panels in the Desktop.

The pictures below are pictures I've taken a few days ago for another thread here in Anand's Video forum (don't forget to left-click on the picture after it loads to see it in 1280 x 960):

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/2377/dodflash00006uj.jpg
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/3096/dodflash00015qt.jpg
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/72/dodflash00021my.jpg
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/7532/dodflash00035wd.jpg
http://img400.imageshack.us/img400/5339/dodflash00044ug.jpg
http://img400.imageshack.us/img400/7410/dodflash00056ir.jpg

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/1958/dodflash00088tp.jpg

I had 6x QAAA (Quality Adaptive A-A) enabled when I took the pictures. But I actually play with 4x QAAA to save some more frames-per-second. And the GPU becomes quite hot when playing with 6x QAAA as I've noticed (65ºC+). That's mostly why I'm looking for a new PC Case, and eventually a better air-cooling solution for the card.

Huh, yeah perhaps.

But you know ... the X1800 XL didn't create those textures itself ... you know ... developers did. Maybe you could call Valve and tell them ? ATi has nothing to do with that.

Well, to be someone who doesn't have a x1800XL venturing in here (no, I'm not trolling) my 7800GT ran at a 46C idle in a P180 (room temp around 24C) with the fan at about 42%. I find it odd that ATI would release something that ran so hot. Were I in your shoes, I'd really be checking out a VF700 or something?

How loud is the cooling?

I have an ATI X800GTO2 (Unlocked and OC) and it runs idle at 36 and loads at 61 (hmmm, is temp sensor right, using atitool, the idle and load temp seems pretty far off). If i'd own a X1800 series, i would DEFINITELY get a aftermarket cooler (might have to wait a while for manufacturers to make better coolers since the stock one seems pretty good)

I have a sapphire x1800xl waiting for my new motherboard. an article i read said that the powered by ATI cards are for the most part built by ATI cards. I did a quick check on it and it seems legit. the Cooler on my sapphire card has a sticker over the officical built by ati cooler. I can peel the sticker off and have the girl with the sword instead of the the alien that sapphire uses.

Link to review

That is the link/review that mentions the sticker over the regular cooler.

Remember, the temperatures I've mentioned were the ones under over-clocked conditions (550 Mhz / 550 Mhz).

At stock speeds, it remains between 45ºC to 48ºC idle, and around 60ºC during load.

And as I mentioned in my first post, 70ºC+ is extremely rare, but does happen. But that's with over-clocked frequencies.

I'll definitely look for another air-cooling solution, as I said, too.

As for the noise, it isn't loud enough to be annoying. In fact, I expected it to be more noisy. That's with fan speed at 73% (can't get round numbers heh). So, noise isn't a problem here. Only heat can be. Thing is ... even at 70ºC+ there is still no artifacts. I'm quite impressed by that. I mean ... my BBA 9800 Pro would get plagued by artifacts of all kinds if it ever reached more than 65ºC.

I've read horrible stories about X1800 XL idling at 60ºC+ ... but I presume X1800 XL's with such idle temps aren't in the best conditions, in terms of air-flow, and overall environement temperature. I mean don't expect it to run at 40ºC during gaming if your room temperature alone is above 30ºC. It's winter here (Montreal, Canada), so my room temp is helping. I know that during summer with those humidex factors kicking in just like last summer, with temps above 40ºC, then I'm gonna need another air-cooling solution, or it might just artifact day-long.

Mine indeed runs warm, but I have poor cooling in an overloaded case.

ATItool seems somewhat buggy, so I've uninstalled it. It seemed to have an issue with the fan control, and couldn't see where to enable a framerate counter so I've not got much use for it.

The X1800 demos are fantastic, especially ToyShop...., I had seen the video for them, but running the ToyShop real-time demo is awesome, simply awesome. Well worth the downloads.

The card seems fast and stable so far.

*H.264 decoding is not supported out of the box, and the decoder download link leads to a "Available Soon" message at ATI.com
*Its a VIVO card, but no capture software is included with the software distribution disc that I could find.

heh, found this thread via google when looking for normal temps of the X1800. only having mine a couple weeks, i noticed it runs quite hot. i'll answer the questions from the first post:

1) Are you using ATi's reference air cooling ? If not, which one ?

Yes, I'm using the default cooling. I want to find something that works better :p

2) What are your GPU Idle & Load temperatures ?

55-60ºC idle, up to 90ºC load !!! not good :p

3) Have you tried to over-clock Core and/or Memory frequencies ? If so, at which frequencies ? And is it stable ?

I've overclocked to the X1800 XT's stock speeds, and it ran stable. Due to my temperatures though, I clocked back to 500/495

4) Have you done one or more benchmarks using Future Mark's 3DMark01/03/05 ? Which drivers are you using ? And if so, could you please post your compare link ?

I've ran all three.
01: 28000+
03: 13000+
05: 7477 (up from 6300 when i first bought the card. been tweaking cpu/ram settings :D)
I'm using the ATI Omega Drivers v2.6.87 based off Catalyst 5.12 (advanced tabs finally work!!)

5) How's your PC Case/Tower ? How many fans ? Is it air-cooled or water-cooled ?

It's an alright case. not best of the best, but good :p there's 2 case fans, (in take/out take). I have the Gigabyte G-Power Pro HSF on my CPU. after closing a game, I find it helps to cool my chipset and video card quicker by turning the fan up to max (which is loud! :p). there's also the chipset fan itself. the video card is right under the nF4 chipset, so the X1800 helps heat that up. When I get time over the next couple days, I want to put Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste on the GPU and chipset and see if that makes a difference.

6) Which brand is it ? Built By ATi ? Powercolor ? Sapphire ? HIS ? Another brand ?

ATI Radeon X1800 XL 256mb GDDR3 Avivo, Built by ATI

Hope this helps ;)

My connect 3d card will arrive later this week. Because it's connect 3d it will probably suck but a BBA card would have been 40 bucks more and honestly overclocking can't be worth that much. Maybe i'll be pleasantly surprised though.
