Hi,

today I received the disappointing news that my ATI AIW X800XT order has been cancelled, given stock was depleted at the end of August. So, I'm back to square one, looking for another AGP solution. My primary focus was not on the features of the AIW card, but only that it was a great deal and a decent upgrade from my 9600 pro.

Well, it seems the X1650 Pro Agp card will begin shipping tomorrow. How do you all feel about this as an AGP upgrade:

Here are the details:

and, it appears it will be priced around $99US.

Are there any better options or choices? The price is certainly right, if, indeed, this is correct?

thanks,

John

It certainly wont be anywhere as fast as a x800xt, but it's still considerably faster than a 9600p, and for $99 it's a good deal. Just dont expect to be running any modern games on high settings with the x1600p. If you want a card with higher performance, you can still get a x850pro, a x800gto, or a 7600gs (in that order by performance). Some gto's can unlock to 16 pipes, and with an OC would be as fast as a x800xt.

I'm actually not heavy into games. I have IL2 and an r/c sim; apart from this, I use my computer primarily for text and photoshop. So all out raw 3D power isn't as important to me as image quality, especially in 2d.

I know that this Visiontek card isn't exactly the same, but probably over 90% similar and the review conclusion emphasizes the stunning visual quality of the x1600xt, which he attributes to SM3 (a feature not found on the previous ATI cards you site). I've considered the 7600 gs and gt, but both these cards are considerably more money; that is, if the X1650 Pro comes in at the advertised $99.

Have a look:

Let me know what you think.

Oh, whoops, I didnt realize it was a x1650pro. I thought you meant a x1600pro, which is slower. Well, the x1650pro is about as fast as a 7600gs or slightly faster, so for $99 it's a great deal, especially if you're not that much into gaming.

Sorry to hear that Dr J but not really a shocker at this point, eh? If the X800XT @ $109 was a refurb perhaps you can still consider a used X800 variant. Otherwise the X1650 Pro does look to be good bang for the buckaroo.
