I'm getting ready to build a new Core 2 Duo PC and I'm trying to decide on a graphics card. I'm not a big gamer, mostly Warcraft 3 and a little CS:S. I've been looking at either a X1600 Pro or an X800GTO. I know the X800GTO is an older card than the X1600 Pro but from what I've seen it's also faster. However the X1600 Pro can be purchased with a silent HS. Would either of these be strong enough to run CS:S on a Dell 2005WFP reasonably well? I really like the fact that the X1600 Pro has no cooler but if it's significantly slower than the X800GTO I will go for that.

I'd rule out the X1600pro pretty quickly. The reason is that its performance is not too good at all, and it won't even have any chance of touching an X800GTO (esp one that's been unlocked like the Sapphire GTO^2s). However, given that you want to run CS:S on a 2005, I would suggest something like a 7600GT. That performs on the level of the X850XT PE and overclocks well. If you really want the silent HS you can get a slower GS or install your own aftermarket HSF, but in my experience the HSF on my GT is very quiet when run at 25% in 2D use. In fact, the loudest part in my comp right now is the HDD ;)

yeah i agree with 996. the x800gto will STOMP a x1600pro. It will pick it up, brush its hair, then beat the ****** out of it and use its head as a mop. Throw in the fact that a whole lot of the x800gto's unlock and u get even greater value. If you are worried about heatsink get the HIS ICEQ3 X800GTO 256mb from newegg, it comes with a silent Artic Cooling cooler that exhausts hot air out of the back of the case. Bought that one for a friend and it flashed to 16 pipes right out of the box. Whatever you do do NOT get the x1600pro if you can help it, u will find nothing but dissapointment.

Thanks for the recommendations. I was looking at a 7600GS also and see that it usually matches or beats the X800GTO in most bechmarks. Plus I can get it with a silent cooler. Any recommendations on a card? The two I was looking at are:

Gigabyte GV-NX76G256D-RH
XFX PVT73PUDJ3

A 7600GT is a little out of my budget. I'm was trying to keep the video card cost under $110-$115.
