I am looking for a good agp vid card for around 200 and havent been up on the new vid cards coming out. What is the best bang for the buck in agp cards right now. Im on a Compaq athlon xp 2600 with 1 gig or ram and 120 gig HD. I mostly play COD2 and other shooters but ive been playing on a 9600 radeon. Thx for the help.

$300 for not too much extra in performance over the 6800gs i believe

OP i've searched for the 6800XT but can't find a review anywhere. i'd just go with the 6800gs or save the money

My opinion is if you had already had a 6600 or 6800gs, the 7800gs wouldn't be worth dropping another $300 on. If you have something lower, than jumping straight to the 7800gs is worth it. A lot of places are marking the 6800gs up and it is supposed to run fairly hot. You can overclock it but that makes even more heat, although it can run close to 6800ultra speeds. But yea, the 7800gs is agp, and the only geforce 7-series that's not pci express.

I just made the same decision you are with the same initial budget, but decided to drop a few more dollars to get the 7800gs.

You 9600 to 7800gs will be a great upgrade. Yes it is available thru AGP. I can see where you are coming from about 7800GS only offering a slight increase in performance.

random 6800GS 256MB
400mhz
1100Mhz
12 pipe
$225

random 7800GS 256MB
430mhz
1300mhz
16pipe
$299

Certainly you have more headroom with the 7800 GS. If you're not planning to upgrade in a while I say go for the 7800GS. If you do plan an upgrade in the near future, then go with the 6800GS. I personally would take the 7800GS for ~$70 more, unless you plan to upgrade soon.

At the 200$ price level, the 6800GS is definitely the most powerful card amongst the 3 listed in the original question

so what is the deal with the x1600, is it a like a locked x1900?? I know its new, but I havent been able to find much info about it. If i upgrade to 6800gs then I have to upgrade my psu also cause it requires a 400 watt psu.

Well we can start off with 128 bit memory on the 1600 instead of 256 bit on others. Many reports of ppl with 200w power supplies in a shuttle running 7800 and 6800. Both recommend a 350w psu. I would imagine you would be ok if u get a regular clocked 6800gs or 7800gs. Most it seems having psu problems with a marginal psu are with the overclocked/superclocked models of the above. BTW a 7800 requires less power than the less efficient 6800gs. What psu do u presently have? I have decided to wait a week or 2 and get a 7800gs due to less heat produced, 4 more pipes and possibility of unlocking to 20 pipes when the new riva tuner comes out, and less power demanded by the card. I would expect the 7800gs to be around 270 bucks in a couple of weeks max.

Not at all. It is a completely distinct core. For a complete comparo between X1600, 6800GS and other cards, read this X-Bit Labs Test

...And they are using a X1600XT for this test. The X1600 Pro is a notch below the XT

No one is considering the CPU limitation. Not worth overshooting your gfx card if your cpu cant keep up.

I am in simmilar situation but with P4 3ghz. Not sure what to go with.

don't really think the cpu is the weak spot with those cards, at least not to the point that it would keep you under a playable fps. personally i would go a used x850xtpe and try to get one for ~$200, or even a x800xtpe for the around the same price or cheaper.

Ok good, if it is not cpu limited then the bus speed should not matter all that much as the 2600 has a bus speed of what ... 266mhz?

There was and the 266 model was basically a paper release from the retail POV... but it did make it into some OEM systems, which is what the OP has (compaq).

Not a huge deal, because the 266 2600 was slightly higher-clocked than the 333 model.
