X15 noise?

I'm thinking about purchasing either a Quantum Atalk 10K II, or a Seagate CHeetah X15, but I'm curious about the noise. I'm hearing conlifcting information.... how loud is it? I currently have a 75GXP which is silent. THe case fans make a decent amount of noise, but not that bad. I just don't want to have a drive that is screaming loud.

What's noise to some is music to others. 🙂

If you're concerned about noise, stay with something 10Krpm.

Some have complained about the X15. Some say it's loud, others say no prob.

I have Ultrastars by IBM (36LZX). I don't consider them loud.

Some say that putting the drive behind a cooler helps diminish noise.

compared to an IBM 75GXP, if you have heard one, it's a little louder. The seek noises are high pitch and can get annoying but you get used to it. I would say it's even quiter than the Quantum Fireball KA. The new WD 20BB are super quite though.
 
I hear a lot of conflicting info on this drive. As was mentioned, some say it is loud whereas others say it is quiet. I did read the storagereview review, and I believe they did mention that they were disappointed with the noise of this drive.

Its going to be put in a Lian-li pc-68 case, so I'm not concerned about heat. I do not want a system that sounds like its goign to take off.

The drives I'm considering are:
Seagate X15
Quantum Atlas 10k II
IBM Ultrastar


One other quick question.... I have an older 3940 dual channel SCSI card. Since I do not need the bandwidth of the U160, will upgrading to a newer card such shouldn't make a difference, correct?

That's because people's tolerance of noise varies quite a bit, and environment noise varies quite a bit as well. The X15 is certainly the loudest drive I have used, but I don't find it that obtrusive. High RPM CDROM drives make a lot more noise when just spinning than the X15 does. While the X15 sounds like someone tapping their nails on a desk when accessing data, the 10K II makes a much lower noise. To say one is louder than the other really depends on which type of noise bothers you more.
