X15/39160 issues with KTA7

These drives have the same characteristics (~6.5 mS seek, 42 MB/S max, 30 MB/S min, 36 MB/S average) scores in HD Tach. The burst NEVER goes over 65 MB/S! With ACPI it is in the 50's.

Also with a three disk stripe I would think the reads should peak way over 100 MB/S in ATTO. They don't even go over 85 MB/S. Something's fishy here and I'm believing it's VIA. :|

Also, this 39160 (because it has dual controllers) uses TWO IRQ's and trying to get it to NOT share with another device in the system is like a three ring circus with one ring. :Q

Cheers!

something is not right with your settings as I usually get 76-78Mb/s in HDTach with my x15! :frown:

What mobo/chipset are you using?

I have three drives. The boot drive is on the A channel and I have a pair on the B channel. All show 160 on the BIOS.

EDIT: I just ran the test (this is with Windows ME so it's FLAB-32. :) )

HD Tach Result

Cheers!

I think I need to put one of these drives and the 39160 on a P3BF and test it. I refuse to go back to the dark side, however.

Cheers!

The drives are performing fine. Burst speed is a useless stat, don't worry about it.

I realise that burst speed isn't very important to real world use. I'm just wondering if something else is wrong because these drives don't *feel* any faster than the pair of DM 60+ running striped they replaced! Definitely NOT worth $1400 IMO...

Of course, I haven't really put the pedal to the metal yet (as in recording multiple tracks). The seek times of ANY IDE drives couldn't cut the mustard there.

We shall see.

Anyone else that has these (X15's) notice the "foghorn" sound briefly as the drive is spinning up? I remember hearing that on a Samsung drive years ago. That actually sounded more like a raspberry. When all three do it close together it is quite loud to say the least! :)

Cheers!

I sold this combination because it was not worth it. From what I can recall, I believe there were two instances in the device manager as well.

Cheers!

Okie, thanks for the quick response.
I recently got 39160 and it is connected to my IBM 36LZX 18.2Gb 10K drive and two CD-ROMs: Plextor 40X and Yamaha 2100S (16x10x40). So far this combination seems to be much faster than my previous IDE setup. I haven't done any benchmarks yet though.

If you are using the 1.00b Adaptec drivers that may be the problem. The domain validation is messed up so drives can't talk to each other at full speed. Disable domain validation in the SCSI card BIOS and all should be well. Domain validation just makes sure you have your chain configured correctly and if not, it drops the speed down. As long as your chain is ok, domain validation is not necessary.

EDIT - wow, old thread. Sorry I didnt see this thread earlier, that DM problem is a pain and Adaptec support wont tell you anything about it.

Sharkeeper:
What combo did you sell because it was not significantly faster than what IDE setup?
and What combo did you replace it with that was signficantly faster than what IDE setup?
I am or rather was planning on purchasing an Ultra 160 card and SCSI (Seagate X15) but am hesitant to do so based on the comments in this thread; what do you suggest?
I currenly have an IDE66 Raid 1 setup.
