I have two options for my older Thinkpad T60: X1400 or 950GMA.

I am not sure which way to go. I see that some games like UT2003 play fine on either, but others like Quake 4 need the X1400.

This is going to be a travel laptop. I will usually be on AC power so battery life between the two is not such a concern.

I may want to fire up an old game or two to play though but mostly this will be for email/web under Windows 7 32bit.

I am thinking the X1400 would still be worth it.

You are thinking correctly. Even if 950GMA was faster (and it is not), the X1400 has better, more mature software support and developer testing when it comes to anything gaming. Both are ancient and feeble, but the X1400 less so.

The 950 fails in some games because it contains neither hardware T&L nor hardware geometry support. Some of the advanced pixel shader functionality is software as well. While it supports DX9c on paper, running many, many games simply results in garbled rendering.

I have the motherboard, may as well swap it...it's only about 100 screws :)
