Does anyone know about any free software packages like X-windows that run on dial-up connection? I have been trying to run X-windows on dialup, but it is not responding.

man any of those programs would be so SLOW over dialup, i wouldn't even bother.

if you really want to, cygwin is the big open source (free) one.

X-Windows over a 100 Mbit lan works great, but dialup... man... that'd be SLOW

free X windows software comes with pretty much every free workstation oriented distro of linux known to man.

mandrake, redhat, slackware, debian, suse, knoppix ... etc
