X Vs. Y

It seems that 80% of all video card discussions and posts (including here) revolve around "How does "X" video card compare to "Y"?" My question is, why is there not a great comparison "chart of doom" that shows all the cards (Mobile included pls for us Laptop folks) in order of power? Using real world apps, such as games FPS performance etc so we can compare, and really know what we are getting into when purchasing a vid card or a system.

Does such a thing exist? If not why not?

If there was a big "chart of doom," then members of one or both "sides" would get irrational and start spinning results, bickering about the testing criteria, alleging bias on the part of the testers, etc.

Just be glad we've missed the resulting fanboy apocalypse. :)

"There are lies, damn lies and statistics" Thats the problem, the fanboys will selectively cite sources, claim bias and derail said thread with flaming, it is a good idea but it wouldn't work.

Only if it were done by someone like Ratchet at rage3d, which everyone can trust and knows he is unbiased... still, there would be too many benchmarks in which the same cards would perform differently and you would be left wondering which card to get anyway... the thing about x vs y is that it depends for which person and the games they want to play..

Tom's hardware has their VGA (and cpu) charts that have tons of cards and I think the quality is pretty good (for relative performance anyway, not for absolute bickering), but I don't think they include laptop cards. Laptop graphics aren't standardized enough and can't be compared among the same cpu.

Tomshardware or this site could surely put something like this together. They are unbiased (enough) and have access to the hardware. I would even accept an totally biased account from Nvidia and ATI if they listed their OWN cards in bloody order, with mobile chips included. Surely THEY of all people can. Its just ridiculous that there is no source for this information, when we are plunking down hundreds for a card (or thousands for a lappy) without this information.

Eh...well, I find that I just use tons of reviews, max PC, CPU, HardOCP, Toms hardware, Anandtech...

Too many times I have seen one place say that X crushes Y, then another place says X and Y are the same, and then another Y is better than X.

In the end, I think it comes down to lots of reading reviews and forum posts..for ex: right now, it seems the GX2 is better FPS wise, but in terms of overall value, the X1900 is much better...I've gotten that impression from various forum posts and such.

Different drivers give different results. Diffrent settings give different results.
While you think it wouldn't be to difficult it obviously is.
Then you also have to factor in that some review sites might be either biased or are "sponsered" which seem to tilt numbers to one side or the other.
So I just go with constancy in results and thats why I've got my x1900xt...

Pick one and run with it. That's the best way to get a graphics card.

Of course drivers matter, as well as tweaks anyone can do to play with clockspeeds etc. but right now few people can say if a go 7300, go 7400, go 7600 vs x1600, x700, x1800 or pick ANY card really is any good compared to another. This is double true when comparing mobile cards vs. tower cards. The only exceptions is when a brand new card comes out, and they pit it against the supposed last fastest card from both ATI and Nvidia. I guess what I am looking for is a round-up. Use latest availible supported drivers, no tweaks, and just rank em using real world apps and games.

We all read these sites religiously when thinking about buying anything, of course! The fact that we are talking here proves that =p
