X-ray machine and dell 700m

My roommate is moving to east coast this week so I want to make sure he knows what to do at the airport, should he take lappy scanned by the x-ray machine or he can keep it with him from the machine and let the security to search his lappy to avoid the damage to his favorite Dell 700m?

The Xray machine will do no harm to his machine. I just travled not 2 long ago and you are to take your lappy out and put it in a diff bin to go through the Xray machine.

There is no potential damage aside from physical abuse or theft but even those issues are running very nil these days. Besides, hand inspections are no longer allowed for anything post 9/11, everything must be x-rayed or you cannot take it with you. Simple as that.
