X-Plane 10 - is anyone using this sim?

I have to build my father a new system and was wondering if anyone uses this sim?

If you do please let me know how it runs on your system (fps, choppy, etc) and spec's of your system.

On my aging comp e5200@3.4 with a hd6850 I get ~20fps@1620x1050 and it can get choppy if I crank up the settings.

I am leaning towards building him a 2500k/2600k based system, but I would like to do my homework first as he is not in a rush 🙂

Thanks in advance.

I tried the demo. At high settings it's literally a slide show on my system (3 FPS). At lower settings it runs smoothly but doesn't look very good. Scenery looks really weird, with sim-city like cities and strange-looking, squared off (L-shaped) turns and corners.

Thanks for your input.

So far from what I have read it seems like you need a computer from 5 years in the future to really run this sim well.

No offence meant but both the your and JimmiG GPUs are just mediocre. They seem to be the weak link in gaming for your builds.

Could be the game but I have a feeling FPS would increase if you only got a better GPU and didn't do a whole new build.

Historically, X-plane has been easier on specs than FSX. I have a 2600k with 570 GTX and can play FSX maxed. I also have X-plane 9 which runs maxed. A 2500k/2600k based system (great CPUS btw) shouldn't have any problem running X-plane 10 as long as you pair it with a decent GPU., but I havent played x-plane 10 so take it for what its worth.

I plan on getting x-plan 10 soon so I'll be able to give a more accurate assessment then. All I can say is, don't skimp. If your willing to pop for a 2600k, spend a few extra dollars and get a decent GPU, otherwise it will just be wasted potential.

Ivy Bridge should be coming up here in the next couple of months. If he can wait might be good to either go with that or wait for the SB price cuts...

I was just using my computer as a baseline. I think this game is much more CPU dependent, and X-Plane 10 is supposedly able to use as many cores as you have. So I was just trying to see if anyone here ran the sim with a much newer system then I have.

Thanks Anteaus for the input. 10 is a lot more CPU hungry than 9 from what I have read. It also just came out and from what I gather hasn't really been optimized yet.

Thanks chucky2, that isn't a bad idea.

FSX is notoriously bad. Despite being a six your old game, my PC still chokes on it if I crank everything up to max. My computer is at least as powerful as the most powerful gaming rig you could build at the time. Which leads me to believe that FSX is just poorly coded. It seems to benefit from higher clock rates than it does more cores.

X-Plane 10 seems to be the opposite. More cores the better. I like how in the recommended requirements, they suggest using a dual-CPU system.

There's two things that seem to really drag performance down. Physics calculations of course. However, the biggest hits come from the auto-gen scenery. Buildings, trees, moving cars and boats. With these set to low, FSX runs fine even with everything else turned up. Add all those things the CPU has to take account of and it brings the computer to its knees. I'm thinking X-Plane 10 has the same issue.

FSX is blatently poorly coded lmao. Every core simmer knows this. There are various tweaks to help with FPS as well as addons that update much of the scenery in game. There are ways of dealing with autogen issues. I run maxed with PMDG 747X and get a steady 30 FPS.

I used to be a core simmer but I've been out of the community for awhile. What are some good guides out there?

True but if my system produces single-digit frames at the highest settings, what kind of system would it take to get 30 FPS? Eight GTX460's in SLI and a 10 GHz 8-core CPU..?

Sure my system struggles with other games, but they're still playable at medium-high settings, unlike X-Plane 10.
