X-Fi XtremeMusic - Driver only or load the entire cd?

I have not installed an X-FI yet, but usually the Creative software is so-so. Is there anything useful? I will have Klipsch PM 5.1's and Sennheiser HD555's hooked up. I planned on downloading the SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_07_0004.exe driver from Creative's site and skipping the installation cd. Is this the recommended action?

It might, but you do need at least the creative audio console, which I doubt comes with that driver. It's a minimal level options menu basically.

The Creative Audio Console should come with the new drivers--at least it does with the newest Audigy 2 ZS drivers.

I would not recommend installing everything on the CD. It wouldn't hurt anything to do so, but it's not necessary. I would just install the normal panels (EAX Console, Surround Mixer, THX Panel, etc.) and leave all of the extras such as MediaSource and the Minidisc Center behind. Also, there is a utility available that allows you to set up profiles for each X-Fi state (Creation, Entertainment, Game). Search the Creative forums at forums.creative.com for more info.

I completely ignored the CD and just used the latest one from Creative's website. The Audio Console is not bloated like the one from the CD.

Use the web version! It works wonderfully.

Thanks!!! I am installing it as we speak. 🙂

In case anyone down the road finds this post I will add some additional thoughts.

1) The X-Fi cd gives you the option during setup to do a "minimal" install which is bascially the drivers, all of the panels, system info, and the diag tool. You'll get all of the individual panel adjustments. You bypass the rest of the bloatware.

2) The SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_07_0004 web update is all you need for basic functionality of the card. This is the latest "official" driver, and it comes with the console tool which offers quite a few adjustments. Here's a screenshot. However you do not get the full functionality of the 3 panels (entertainment, game, audio creation).

3) The X-Fi Mode Changer is a very useful tool that can switch modes when you launch a particular application.

As Ichigo pointed out, the best method is to do #1 first, reboot, then do #2, reboot. Although #3 is optional I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

Thanks for the update, just got my X-fi and it's sitting behind me. I'll check out the minimum install. Just going to melt my ears with the old onboard before putting it in so I can REALLY see the difference. Then again, this onbaord sounds amazing compared to the crap I've been using for the past few weeks when I couldn't hook up my system.

Got it installed, went with Custom to include the THX panel which is nice, but the defaults were perfect for my setup. Too bad I got a screwy disc with bad blocks:|; hope nothing is messed up (or gets messed). Oh and the crystalizer rocks!
