X-Fi XtremeGamer mic problems

Since Vista crippled my Audigy2 ZS, I bought an X-Fi XtremeGamer. It has some kind of multifunction jack where I plugged in my mic. I can hear myself talk through the mic on my speakers, but recording is either choppy or full of echos. I never had this kind of feedback with my old card. I've searched and found that other people have similar mic problems with this card, but nobody seems to have a solution other than "go buy a USB mic" which isn't acceptable.

you might be hearing echos on the recording because your mic is hearing itself thru speakers. As for choppiness it could be related to this as well, or there might be a different reason (loose connector, broken wire in the mic lead etc)

I suggest you do this:
1) mute microphone under playback (this will ensure you do not hear your own voice thru speakers)
2) select microphone as the only source for recording (not what your hear, just the microphone - this will ensure no background application sounds or noises get recorded)

Good Luck

EDIT: I use X-Fi and have no such issue so it seems like configuration problem me thinks.

My X-Fi was funky as well, and I never did get it settled .. I just gave up and use the onboard audio in conjunction with the X-Fi, using the mic plugged into the front AC97 jacks.
