When I install X-FI and use the speaker set-up wizard there is a 5.1 channel option for analog connections.
However, when I connect via digital using optical cable and there special digital connector thingie then the set-up wizard only lsists something called "2/2.1" (not just 2.1 but 2/2.1) as an option and when I test the speakers using X_Fi set-up my two rear speakers are not active.
However, once X-Fi is installed I can set the THX/Dolby settings to 5.1 - however, when I test the speaker set-up the two outside rear speakers still aren't active or have the same output as the inside two.
BUT when I go to movie mode on my actual inspire spekers tuner all 4 speakers work - but I cannot tell if I am actually getting 5 different channels.
The computer shop told me that this is the tradeoff - that you need the analog connection for TRUE 5.1 sound, but then get lesser quality. OTH Digital will not let you set-up as 5.1 but the speakers or the dolby part of the X-FI will kind of mimic 5.1 or at least do some variant of 2.1 and use all your speakers properly for surround sound and quality will be better - just not quite as many true channels or something.
This is kind of confusing to me as I know little about this kind of stuff. Can anyone enlighten me?
