X-Fi fatality

Considering the audio HW in my sig, do you think the Fatality is worth it? The cash won't hurt me, unless everything sounds the same after the purchase. 😉 I game a lot, play MP3's, listen to audio streams and burn CD's for the car. Opinions welcome.

It will sound exactly the same as the ~$90 X-fi music.

If you're looking to spend money, I think you're better off lining your case in 20s, it would look cooler.

The X-Fi FATAL version is a ripoff, blatent, bloody, flaming ripoff. If you MUST go X-fi just get the basic card or the model above with the live drive or whatever they call it now. Don't waste your money on X-FRAM, it does NOTHING. You want to buy a physics card too? 😉

Extreme Music is the entry level card, with the box and the X-RAM. Maybe a Physx 2 card, but not the current one. 😉

LMFAO MONSTER CALBES!?!?!?!?!?!? OOOOH BOY! Get ready to be flamed like crazy! BTW, your sig is a mess, organize it.

also, the x-ram won't make any difference. It's not worth the extra money.

Not that this does you any good, but Creative just had an $80 rebate on the Fatality that expired a couple of days ago. I would have recommended it for $200, but at $280 or whatever it sells for online normally, I would not.

It's not that Monster products are bad. They're overpriced, but I could see myself buying them if I had a huge discount.

ya, judging from your rig cash won't hurt you

IMO not worth it you already have an Audigy 2 ZS but I guess if you got the money go for it.

I'm looking for better sound, more features, you know, standard upgrade wishes. It's true that my ZS doesn't sound bad, but then I thought onboard was good until I heard a ZS.

Since I don't have anything to compare them to I don't know if they're overpriced or not. I do know that the workmanship and attention to detail is astounding. The ones I replaced look like spiders web next to these.

I buy MC just because of their life-time warranty

But then again, only my guitar cable (which I step on it so many times) is MC

yeah, they look cool 🙂

The fatality is a good card despite the peanut gallery review 😛, just not for your application. Really, sometimes I don't understand this site as there once was a group of rabid defenders of all things Creative when they had serious driver issues, now that they're releasing better cards with better drivers the tables are turned and I'm defending Creative while everyone's bashing them. If you wanted to run standard stereo speakers w/o a receiver, then the Fatality is a serious contender. As mentioned, you just missed the sale on Creative equipment (I bought an X-Fi Platinum during that sale).

Monster Cables are fine if you are using Z1 (is that what they are called?) or any similar entry-level cables (their pricing is on par with other cables, I think). If you are using any cables that can be considered 'exotic' or 'hi-end', well...stay away from it in the future. Higher-priced speaker cables mean NOTHING, unless of course, you are going for the connectors/build quality (you don't want your cat to have one swipe at them and scratch the protective shield off).

X-Fi Fatal1ty is a rip-off and has 0% performance benefit, even in the games that support it.

Thanks for your perspective, Slammy. It seems to track well with the reviews I've been reading. Here's one:

Fatality review

Everything that review says is applies to all the different X-Fi models. I'm pretty sure everyone will agree that you'll get better sound quality with the X-Fi than the 2ZS.

However, you won't see any improvement between the Extreme Music and the Fatal1ty.

"Considering the few games that support X-RAM currently I would be hard pushed to recommend the Fatal1ty FPS over any of the other versions." (from the link you gave)

Having X-RAM won't increase sound quality - it's designed to increase performance. The people who buy this sound card have plenty of extra power to waste. (That and pretty much only BF2 supports it, only netting you a few FPS gain)

I appreciate your POV as well alpha, but you should know that I read the review (and more) before I posted it. If I decide to go with the Fatality it'll be because I expect X-RAM support in at least a few of the upcoming titles that interest me, and if it means just a few FPS increase in any of them, I'll be both pleased and ready. 😉

Well, I'm off the Fry's to make my choice. Thanks guys. I'll let you know if I can tell the the difference in terms of fidelity.

Fair enough. I'm sure it will get more support in future games (since I believe it's fairly trivial to support). I just don't see any noticeable gains on high end systems. On systems with slower CPUs and RAM, I think it provides a bigger gain.

Even with fast systems, now much is enough? If I can streamline\improve any aspect of my machine I end up being able to push back that next wallet-busting upgrade just a little further, while at the same time increasing my enjoyment of what I have now. In my book, these are good things.
