I would like to add a dashboard to my xbox are there any good forums that go over the pros and cons of doing such a mod?

this might seem a little obvious, but you can't just install a dashboard like installing a program on a computer. You'll need to have a modchip installed on the Xbox before you can do anything.
 
I used the font hack from the before mentioned xboxforums. No opening of console, but it now boots to evolutionX.

Then it starts loading Gentoo with a button push.
