I thought we already slaughtered horses and used them completely? If not, WHY not. I remember reading something that we send them to mexico but also use them here, guess it's ok to slaughter there.

Keep in mind horses are a work animal and after they can't do the work or race (thoroughbreds) or trot (saddlebreds) not much use except for breeding.

I do have a serious problem with them killing wild horses unless the herds are too big/unsustainable.

I think when I was in gradeschool that horse meat was on the menu.

People eat all kinds of things, like raccoons and possums, why not horses? They have to do something when they need to youthanize a horse (How do you spell that?). Where do they send horses when they fall down at the track and brake their leg?

First they kill them, on the track, then they sell them to mexico AFAIK. The side of racing we don't want everybody to see.

I have no problem with this proposal. horses are livestock just like cows, chickens and sheep and i do not have a problem with trigger being the first ingredient listed in Alpo.

I really wonder how people reconcile their acceptance for obtaining meat from cattle and sheep and pigs on the one hand with their outrage at the prospect of obtaining meat from Their Friend Flicka.

Come to think of it, since I discovered Vietnamese cuisine a number of years ago, I've kind of had a hankering for well-prepared dog. I mean, PIGS are MUCH smarter than dogs, for gosh sakes, so what could possibly be the objection to periodically raiding the city pound and harvesting freshly-euthanized dog carcasses?

Even cats might be tasty, if prepared correctly. And what better way to turn all that wasted mouse and rat protein into good, edible human food?

People won't go for it here. It doesn't matter what they are, some cultures prize different animals and in the West we don't eat stallion burgers.

Meat is meat, but horses are like pets and seem to think a lot like us so I'm sure to some people it seems cannibalistic.

Here in Colorado, we always get stories of abandoned/mis-treated horses. Generally, you can't make money off of horses, so they should go somewhere to be humanely killed.

It's not like they are Buffalo, that need protection, and range.

all you dopers should be on board with this. horse meat was once legal for human consumption in the US. It's still legal in most parts of the world.

I think I've posted this story on ATPN once before, but it's apropos to this thread:

A number of years ago I was passing a pet store that had a large picture window in the front. A young woman was bent over scratching her finger on the glass, apparently trying to get the attention of something inside. I came closer, and saw that she was focused on a young, very cute, floppy-eared rabbit. She was making those little cooing, baby-talking noises that cute things inspire in us humans, though I doubt the rabbit could hear her through the glass. She was REALLY taken with that rabbit. Anyway, I kind of peered in to the right of her shoulder, and then said, "I hear they're delicious sauteed."

That woman is now my wife.

Not.

Why not put a bit of soylent green on the menu as well?

Thin out the herds of homeless, and supply those on food stamps with some extra protein. Beggars can't be choosers . . . but they can be dinner!

But seriously, I have no objection. Parts is parts, critters is food.

I dunno, a Seabiscuit Sandwich sounds pretty good to me.

I prefer a seven course meal..... a six-pack and a puppy!

Seriously I have eaten a few strange meats, but always things that I or someone I know hunted and killed. Squirell, cottontails, jackrabits, possum, my excellent compatriot, pigeon, dove, bear, moose, elk, caribou, frog and bull frog. I've even eaten rattlesnake but I seriously don't know if I could stomach more the a bite of horse or dog? I'm sure they taste good but damn, those things are our buddies.

Sure, I could if I HAD to, but I don't have to so....??

It was either in Paris or somewhere in the French countryside, been too long to remember exactly, but I've eaten horse. Didn't know it was horse at the time because I wouldn't let them tell me what I was eating until after I was finished so that if it was something unusual it wouldn't taint my perception of the meal. It was good, not as good as the wild roast boar I had in Germany, but I would eat it again given the opportunity.

Where do they send horses when they fall down at the track and brake [sic] their leg?

They kill them immediately, in situ, to forestall further suffering, which is what I also think should be done with ignoramuses like you who have been in this country long enough not to butcher basic English but still do.

Your ongoing language butchery hurts like a broken leg, annoys like a broken record, and is, imho, one big steaming pile of horse . . . meat.

Don't brake for the intellectually lazy. It's time to cull the herd. ;)
