I just finished putting together a new system with the specs below. (I solved the problem of not starting up as discussed in an earlier post.) I updated the bios from 0302 to 0601 and used the defaults as recommended by the motherboard mfg web site. The OS starts to load but then it reboots and the process continues. Even safe mode will not load. The computer seems to restart during or after loading system file mup.sys during safe mode. I am not sure if this is actually the cause, just reporting what I see on the screen when loading of files stop. It is not clear to me what mup.sys does even after searching for mup.sys on Microsoft's web site. Any suggestions? Do I have to reload WXP SP2? (Is this the right category for this problem?)

Specs:
PSU: FSP AX450-PN 450 watt ATX v.2.2
Mobo: Asus M2A-VM AMD690G AM2 socket, using igp, 0601 bios
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ 1.9ghz Brisbane retail hs/fan
Memory: Crucial 512x2 DDR2-800
HDD: Seagate IDE 160GB
Floppy: LS120 IDE
Cards: in PCI slot SIIG UltraATA 133 PCI controller
Optical Drives: 2 connected to PCI controller card
Mouse & KB: Logitech

No other cards or connections yet. The first four items are new. The other items are from a previous system.

Yeah, unless your old system was very similar to the new one, your best bet is to reinstall Windows. Make sure to take precautions against seemingly-magical worm attack  (scroll halfway down to the large picture and start there).

BTW once you're done, I'm curious to hear what you think of that motherboard, if you have any impressions beyond "it holds the other parts together fine" :D
