I remember reading somewhere that M$ was working on this BEFORE Winxp was even relesed. That's M$ for ya. So I guess the answer is, probably soon. ;)

There is no "SP1" per say. Rather, all the hotfixes provided by it is available through Windows Update. A lot were released on the Oct 25th launch date and some were recently released.

It is standard procedure for the work on a SP to begin before the product is released. This is due to the fact the code is considered gold several months before it's released. During this time many bugs can still be found since debugging is a constant job with any software. So it's only natural the fixes to be included in a SP are being worked on before the product's release.

Those updates on Windows Update are Pre-SP1 Hotfixes which implies that there must be an SP1 coming out soon.

I'll be willing to bet your friend actually has more driver related problems that bugs. If you are using hardware represented on the HCL, there should be very few problems from what I've seen. As far as lagging goes XP pushes the hardware envelope a little further than it's predecessors. You need to have a minimum of 128MB, 256 is much better and a nice fast processor doesn't hurt either.
