WXP performance on older CPUs

ive got a batch of old computers that all need to be upgraded from Win98 to XP ASAP 🙂
theres a SLOT Athlon 700, p3-800, p3-550, and a p2-350...

im going to pair them all with 256-512 (theyre all at 128mb) of ram...

now my question is, will any amount of RAM make these computers usable (as in not so slow it hurts) as far as MS office and standard internet surfing is concerned? semprons are not that expensive these days but if its not absolutely necessary then whats the point right?

so what do you guys think? maybe the athlon and p3 can be saved... the others no hope?

any help appreciated! 🙂

I have XP Pro running on a P3-800 with 512M RAM. It runs just fine. Even with F@H running as a service (in the backround) it's fine for word processing and surfing.

Bozo 😀

awesome! thats really encouraging... so im gonna stick with the p3-800 and athlon700 but im gonna ditch the others.

XP runs fine on my whole lab full of P3-800 machines. The bigger factor is how much RAM you have. I've found it runs great on the ones with 512mb or 1gb of RAM, slower on the ones with 256mb, and abysmally on the ones with 128mb.

I agree with bassoprofundo, XP is almost unbearable with 128MB, and it will slow down a lot with 256MB. Definitely get at least 512MB if you can.

thanks for the feedback guys, you've convinced me to get at least 384 -512 on these machines... PC100 SDR is hard to come by these days though 😛
