see background info here!

cliff notes:
had a problem with 2 comps having the same IP in a network and it was causing numerous problems for everyone, narrowed it down to same MAC address, changed it on one of them and now both work fine and get assigned different IPs...yay! :)

...BUT
everyone can access the computer by typing '\\name' and vice-versa, but it doesn't show up in the workgroup in network neighborhood for anyone else and no other computers show up in that one's network neighborhood (apart from itself)

why is this???? i'm glad that the functionality is there, but its kinda annoying that this happens, does anyone know what's wrong?

network neighborhood is trash.....imho.

I woudnt' worry about it, if you can net view \\computer and get a list, then what is the point of it? It's the worst network tool ever written (almost) and people who rely on it suxxors. (I know, I used to use it to "verify connectivity) for playing games. We couldnt' play till it got around to updating with all the boxes. I suck, yeah, I know)

Yep. Network Places/Neighborhood. I've been in IT for about 7 years now. Used windows networking every single day and I don't know when the last time I used Network Places/Neighborhood. Years certainly. If you have a DNS and/or WINS server on your LAN then NP/NN is a decent connectivity tool. If you don't then it isn't worth a crap. Simple as that.

well the reason i ask is because most ppl here at the office aren't computer literate enough to know how to access another computer's resources using anything other than network neighbourhood...
