I've got a one year old Sienna van. Took it in for the 15,000 mile service yesteday morning. Supposed to be an hour service, took almost 1:45. Finally get my van back, climb in the drivers seat and immediately spot a 6" crack starting under the weather stripping of the passenger side of the van.

They had taken the van through a car wash prior to giving it back to me.

I drive into the sun every morning and with my polarized glasses that crack stuck out like a lightning bolt. It wasn't there before I dropped it off.

Had the service manager come out and look it over. Under the wiper blade there was a barely distinguishable chip that you could faintly feel with a ball point pen.

She gave me her card, told me to talk to my insurance company and see what they could do. Which isn't anything. Allstate doesn't have windshield riders...at least in my region. It's just part of the deducatable.

It's a crappy situation because they can say they didn't cause it, and be right. And I can say it wasn't there before they had it, and I'd be right. They think the chip was there and that the cold water and then heated drying probably caused it to pop.

I've bought two cars from that dealer in the last year, the 2nd car being just last month so I have something work off there. And in truth, the windshield on the van suck and is terribly distorted across the bottom. I'm thinking about asking the dealer to warranty the windshield for the distortion purposes...knowing full well that it probably won't fix that. But at least then neither me or them are out the cost of the windshield.

So AT...how would you handle this?

I'm also going to request to never have my cars run through a carwash again. Earlier this year I had the GM dealer snap the antenna off my car becuase they forgot to take it off before washing. They took responsibility and got it replaced at least.

But yeah...not much luck in the car wash dept for me :(

one thing i've told the dealers is never take my car through their carwash. i've actually sat through one with the tech guy before. its a cheap wash that can scratch the paint. anyway, your situation sucks, but they may very well cover it.

i took mine in for service a few years ago and either their recommended towing company or their service station put a big noticeable scratch on my door. service handled it well and covered a repaint of the door. best of luck

Cant do anything, just get it fixed yourself, these car service places are douche... they will never accept that it was them... had several incidences with many of my friends, never had a good luck, always had to take care of it ourselves...

also, call Toyota CS. they may have a goodwill program where they'll either cover it or some portions of it at least.

I would talk to the service manager again and request they cover the cost. If the service manager refuses, call Toyota and explain the situation.

that sucks and i feel for you. its a small crack on on the passenger side either fix it or deal with it, you are not going to get the dealership to pay for it.

i have a 2004 toyota camry and i have my 7th windshield in my car. it now has a crack all the way across drivers side to passenger side at the wiper level. luckily statefarm has a windshield rider that i make full use of.

i get so many crack windshields because the road i go to work on has MANY side roads that are dirt or rock base. those rocks get kicked up on the blacktop and bango cracked glass. pisses me off to no end.

I am not sure why the car wash is a factor. I'd just talk to them how my car didn't have a cracked windshield.

I am sort of picky about my cars too. A cracked glass would be DEFCON 5. My detailer sucked a chrome trim piece out of my M3 that was already loose, couldn't find it. The replacement was $78. He offered up free details. I only wanted him to try and find my chrome piece. He went above and beyond on it.

Drill the end of the crack so it doesn't continue spreading; fill the hole with clear epoxy.

I believe there are also resin based repair kits for windshields.
