Clearly, I'm not in their target demographic. I mean, $200 for a set of knives that's not good enough for an advanced chef, nor good enough to keep in my primary residence? How much is something they think I'd actually keep around the house? :)

It really is a good price on the set, though. You might even be able to PM it at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and use one of the B&M coupons they're constantly mailing.

I purchased a 9-piece Wusthof set a few years back from Williams-Sonoma during their "After Christmas Clearance". I recall paying about $229 at the time and mine includes a bread knife along with another chopping knife. I don't have the "classic" set, but one that is similar - the handles on mine are a bit more ergonomic.

My observations:

1) Great knives.
2) The sharpening steel is only good for a few years. I've since purchased a sharpening stone from Sears (about $7.00) that blows away the sharpening steel. I'd recommend that you purchase this type of stone on day "one".
3) I've only cut myself once - a small slice on my finger.
4) Did I mention these are great knives?

Looks like you bought stamped series of Wusthof , Classic is a different story and also is a different price, stapmed is also good but the only best knive in the kitchen is Wusthof Classic Chief's 8 or 10'inch and it is included in the set of 7-piece for 199.99. You can read any review about those knives.

Miksem,
Wje may have gotten the Grand Prix rather than the Classic.... Same great blade, just a different style handle....

I don't think this is meant to reflect the quality, but the fact that it would be more of a starter set for someone.... I think you would want to add a knife or two to make the set more versatile. The 6" chefs knife is too small to be an all around knife, and is not as versatile as the 8" would be.

Great knives, superiour to all the Henckels except for I think the Pro S might be comparable....
