If this is true, I'll be impressed- beats the November release date.

hmm.. i'd certainly take that with a grain fo salt. it was CDW i had x800xt pe ordered from last year and they were never able to deliver. and $700? ouch...

btw CDW has none in stock and no estimate of delivery date (sounds familiar)

Dude, I really liked my 9700Pro and kept it in my box 8 months? Same with the 9800Pro, they were the best cards out at the time.

I wouldn't call this ATI part "teh suxorz" either- it's a competitive part with some interesting features, pretty much what I expected.

Sure, it wins some benchmarks, has 512MB RAM, HDR+AA, and you get a free Arctic Cooler type device bolted to it.

It has some things a lot of people here don't like though- high heat, power and noise. I personally don't mind that stuff.

I also think a 7800GTX is a way better value, but these should be good cards.

You mean after waiting over a year for R520 you're willing to wait for yet *another* ATI product launch?

Who says I waited for R520? I've got a 7800 GTX. But if I were an ATi fan that has waited this long then yeah I'd wait even longer for an R580 rather than get this card. Besides, rumor has it on November 7th nVidia will release a higher clocked 512 MB G70 so that will end R520s short-lived win in D3D.

Well, let me just say that R520 taught me a valuable lesson about ATI. Never believe the hype they associate with their next-gen parts. Also, I learned that just because ATI tapes out a core it does not mean that they will be releasing anything in the near future. I've never seen a computer part hyped as much as the R520 for as long as it was, only for it to be released and perform worse than a card that had already been out for some time.

It's strange; I find that nVidia never hypes their upcoming cards. I never seen NV80 threads, and the first I heard of the 7800-series was when I read a review. The nice thing was that cards were available at that point.

This is one area where nVidia definately has ATI beat.

I'd say the hype was mainly generated by fans, fanboys and website admins that were anxious to see the R520 and were conjuring up all forms of theoretical specs. ATi for the most part were very guarded about the R520 and didn't leak much if any information at all so I wouldn't blame them for any of the hype. The X1800XT is a nice card, does well in D3D and with their new memory controller scheme, outperforms the 7800 GTX in Quake 4. It also features better AF and has HDR+AA so it is definitely the better card between the two. But I agree, whenever ATi tapes something out, I don't hold my breath thinking the card will be out within a few months.

How can anyone hate a 9700pro... or atleast Dislike one? honestly, I've been with Nvidia Cards since the 6800GT (bought a 5900U out of curiousity) and I loved the 9700pro from the day I bought it nov 2002 to the day it died oct 2004. ~Its like hating Ice Cream~ But seriously, like was said it does not save ATI from infallibility, the R520 is not that great of a part considering that a slightly bumped up 7800 (7800U with the same mem as the X1800XT) would render the X1800XT impotent until ATI got their R580 out. There is no plausible argument to the contrary yet. R520 is still a far better counter than the 5800/5900FX like was said a million times before.

Dispite what Rollo is saying, he *did* unleash a "Two Minutes Hate" on his R9700Pro, sold it to JiffyLube I think, then bought an NV30 and kept it, very satisfied with his switchover, fan noise and all. :)

This was the event that forever labelled Rollo as an nVidia fan"man", by the way. ;)

At the time, I was pretty amazed with the 9700Pro and left it in my box for 8 months. I did buy a 5800NU then that I OCd to 5800U speeds, but I only kept that a few months before Ebaying it and buying a 9800Pro.

I traded that to DaPunisher in April 2004 after 8 months use, for a 5800U, which I did indeed like. I also knew I'd be getting a 6800 or X800 when they came out in a few months, I was just wanting to try a 5800U.

I also bought a Abit OTES 5800 in there, but it arrived DOA. :(

I always said the 9700/9800s were better, just not as much better as people led you to believe. I'd still say that today.

As for Duvie's comment about MSRP, well if the Xbox 360 was auctioned on Ebay Today, do you think it would go for MSRP? I wouldn't think so :).

Bah, not a surprise that this isn't really in stock... I think I had an X800XTPE on order with CDW for a few weeks last year that never materialized either. That was actually at a decent price though IIRC.

Anyone have an extra $698,680.62 to order 999 of them and see if they can deliver?
