Today after lunch I decided to take a walk in the mall to see what was new and to just spend some quiet time away from the office for a while. As I was walking down the main I passed 3 teenage kids who were discussing college choices. As they were talking I heard one of them mention drugs. This caught my interest enough to want to stop and sit on the bench directly behind them and sort of eaves drop on their conversation. What I heard appauled me. Especially what one of the kids said. I'll translate his jibberish to english so you understand it. He basically said "Dude, who cares what the college costs or where it is. We need to find the school that has the best beer, babes, and drugs. The rest is stuff our parents will take care of."

Beer, babes and drugs?? Is that all they see in colleges these days? No more are the colleges a place of higher learning, but rather a place to get drunk, get high, and get laid?!?!?! :Q :brokenheart::disgust:

Personally I see this as pathetic. Whatever happened to thinking about the future and trying to get a better education to expand your mind and improve yourself? All they seem to care about is trashing their lives. It's disgusting.:|:disgust:

College used to be for people who wanted to go above and beyond what was considered a normal education, now everyone is all but expected to go to college, including dumbasses.

Dude, college is for learning, not getting stoned/drunk off your gord. If you want to do that, don't bother with college. Let someone else who WANTS to learn go in your place.

I'm at college for the education and the awesome IT resources.

<-- self-declared big dork.

I went to college to learn, and I hardly ever partied, but man, College has always been like that. Haven't you ever seen Animal House? And that movie was what, 25 years ago? People who say "Things aren't like they used to be" are simply ignoring what it used to really be like.

Well the funny part is, where I went to college, only the frat houses did that stuff, and only on weekends. Most of the student population was perty reserved. Of course that's what you get for going to a country college. :)

Colleges sell diplomas. They are not necessarily places where you learn a whole heck of a lot.

i agree... even back in the 19th century, it wasn't all about academics. it's mostly rich people imo though... people that are working their asses off to pay for tuition will be more likely to take it seriously. for rich kids, college is sort of a formality, because they have some business lined up for them anyways. not to say there aren't studious rich kids... just that this is something i have noticed in my experiences.

don't dispair, there is always grad school :)

College is more about social practices than education. It was probably equal parts of each in the past, but those days are over, and it's only going to get worse from here on out. With the flow of information and technology as it is now colleges don't hold the monopoly on the tools you need to educate yoursef anymore. People are going to college now just to go to college, and with the increasing costs of going, it's becoming a social club for those that can afford it more than anything else. I'm not saying a college 'education' doesn't have its benefits, but it's getting to the point where those benefits are being artificially maintained by employers that won't consider hiring those without a degree.

Well said! If I didn't need a degree to work in my field, I would probably not have bothered getting one.

I persoanlly learned alot in college. But then I am going on to get my PhD, so I'll have alot more schooling. If I had gone stright into my field, and learned what I needed to to just get the job done, and no more, I would have missed alot.

I'm in biology though, and it helped me figure out where in my field I wanted to go, gave me lots of chances to do new things I may never get to work on again. But my field is so large, jsut getting a lucky job wouldn't work, and you'd probably clean test tubes all day.

Once I have my PhD all I'll have to do is delegate the work to those people :) JK (but not completly)

well, i agree, but i don't :p

it is true, if you are truly determined, you can teach yourself what you learn here. however, very, very, very few people have the discipline to do this. it's just different when you have tests and hw to ensure you learn (provided you care about your grades :p)

also it depends in large part on your major... frankly i view business as just one big social club. i know that there are some people in it seriously, but a lot of the people i know in it are just sort of goofing off. but like in engineering disciplines, people are a lot more serious about their schoolwork.

Not everyone at universities act like that, perhaps the 0.0001% of people you see in the movies do.

So let me get this right, some of you seem to think that you can't balance academics and partying?

the way the original post was worded, those people had a pretty skewed sense of "balance"

I still thinking colleges/universities are ploys by the government to keep the 18-25 yr old unemployment rate down.
