WTH? Stuttering John will become Tonight Show announcer . . .

What the hell is going on? I am a huge Stern fan, but Stuttering John's only worthwhile bits came years ago, when he was doing embarrassing celebrity interviews with questions written by Stern and company . . . This is just weird.

From MSNBC:

BURBANK - Jay Leno?s new announcer on ?The Tonight Show? will be ?Stuttering John? from Howard Stern?s radio show.

John Melendez starts March 29, replacing Edd Hall, who?s leaving the show after 12 years to concentrate on doing movies.

A spokeswoman for the Tonight Show says Melendez is working with a speech coach to control his stutter.

In addition to announcing, Melendez will be in sketches and go out on interviews. But the spokeswoman says they won?t be the sort of interviews Melendez did on the Stern show.

The spokeswoman says Tonight Show executives became interested in Melendez after seeing him on the reality show ?I?m A Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here.? She says Melendez came across as a ?peacemaker? and ?family man.?

Well, if you believe Howard will stop broadcasting in a little over a year, its smart. He has a huge audience, and SJ has a portion of Howard's "black book."

Even if they bring over 10% of the Howard factor, it's a win.

Sterns gonna quit soon? About time he's no were near as funny, I guess there is a limit to the amount of boobs and lesbians to be talked about.

He was actually a Stern show intern years ago. Since he stuttered (making him hard for disgruntled celebrities to ignore or yell at), Howard started using him to ask celebrities incredibly annoying, insulting questions (which were written by Howard and his writers, Fred Norris and Jackie Martling). On one occasion, Sharon Stone's bodyguard actually hit him.

Here are some sample questions:

To Michael Jackson "Did you learn how to walk backwards to avoid your father's punches?"

To Magic Johnson "Aren't you supposed to be dead by now?"

To Mike Wallace "How can you be so old and still have pimples?"

To Montel Williams "Didn't you steal my car?"

To Geena Davis "Were you Thelma or Louise?"

He does not stutter as much as he used to, but still struggles to talk, and seems like a crazy choice for a voice-over announcer.

I wonder if there will be any backlash from the potential guests? As mentioned in a previous post there was actually legal action involving Melendez and Sharon Stone due to the fracas with the body guard. Sharon Stone was so anti Stern that they had to keep Stern on a different floor until Stone left the building when they were booked on Letterman on the same night.

Weird.. I hope it doesn't mess up the Tonight Show.. It's the only show I still watch live along with Conan (though Leno is better).

Uhm, the next Brad Pitt? :confused:

I wonder if it'll be like the sidekick to Conan, who left for other projects. One show on Fox that got cancelled halfway through the season. Yup, that's quite a career.
