WTH? Pioneer doesn't make DVD-ROM drives anymore?

They're still making CD-RW and DVD rom combo drives, but seeing as how stand alone DVD internal drives aren't cost efficient anymore (the former is usually around the same price), they seemed to have abandoned the market there. It's a shame because their slot loading DVD drives are among the best in the industry.

Damn..right when I was about to buy a 120s! I'm suprised after all these years, the slot loading drive never caught on with PC's (it looks very cool and sleek).

well, thats depressing to hear- ive got an old tray 106 that i bought when i first assembled my system and was planning on getting a 106s just for the slot load, guess not

Well that fvcking sucks! I've got 2 x 106S drives and a 120S drive. It sucks to know if my DVD drive goes out, I have to go back to tray loading drives. 🙁

yes, you cannot pry my 106S from my cold fingers evar 😛

Likewise! I have two active in both my desktops, and have two spares on the shelf. I got them all about a year ago from a funny little hole in the wall in City of Industry, CA. I had to have an interpreter close the deal - but it was worth it. 🙂

I think that soon all CD and DVD Roms maybe a thing of the past cause of the price production/markup cost...I mean who is willing to pay under $20US for 1 playa when they can burn for the same price?

Just saw FOUR 106S Pioneer slot loaders for sale on E-Bay. You could have the no bidder for $30. If I dodn't have two spares, I'd hop on that. As far as burning goes - that is a good point. But players can be internal - burners are best external, and not used as players.

The problem with the multifunction drives are that they usually have horrible ripping speeds. The Pioneer 120S freakin' rocked decrypting DVDs and dumping them to the hard drive. The ideal setup is, a Pioneer 120S for the reader and a fast DVD burner. It beats the hell out of a system with just a DVD burner in it.

I luv Slot's myself but I beleive they were discontinued because of problems with them shooting discs out which could mean lawsuits...I mean could you imagine some little one getting hit by one ? JOT

That can be easily solved with hacked firmware if necessary. I don't trust hacked firmware though. 🙂

Apparently some of the manufacturers limit rip speeds to 1X for whatever reason.

I remember getting a petition to bring iomega zip drives to court because the disks were shooting out. Does anyone know if that actually happened and the verdict (probably around 2-3 years ago)?

Heh, I see everyone here listing that they have the DVD-106S. I've got an even older Pioneer 10x slot drive (still running beautifully and used on a regular basis), the DVD-104. I've got you all beat. 😉

I've heard people mention this many many times. But I got a DVR-A07 a couple of weeks ago, and it's definately not limited to ripping at 1x or 2x. With my 10x DVD-ROM (see above) I rip on average 4-6x, the A07 was ripping at 5-7x. Makes sense that it would only be a small improvement since it's DVD-ROM read speed is rated at 12x. But by no means is the rip speed firmware limited.
