I've had it with these things. DirectBuy is a series of warehouses that you can visit and buy things for your kitchen "at direct prices". Except their prices on the commercials are obscene! They give examples of money people saved, like a couple will have saved $4k on a $9k couch. WTF, how many people watching it spend $9k on a couch? And they just had one with a couple that priced out cabinets for their home at $62k and paid only $38k from DirectBuy. WTH! Are the cabinets made with ivovy from virgins' bones? Again, how many people watching that commercial can possibly be saying "Jeeze, maybe I should check them out. I was about to spend $62k on cabinets and these folks could save me some money!".

I dunno skoorb maybe you're just ghetto like that.

The reality is, unless you buy Ikea shelves, or cheap garbage.. shelves cost a ton of money.. especially if they are well made custom shelving systems.

They claimed we would save 70% from the retail prices, so we joined immediately for $4600 on our American Express card (thankfully!). The kitchen designer was not available for 2 weeks, so we went in on our own two days later and pulled out their books. We broke the code, and found out they used horribly inflated prices, then "discount" them back to about what you would pay for full retail on the outside.

Haha, they paid $4600 and had no idea whether they were saving anything.

Skooribe, the cabinets in your kitchen looked so nice, I figured you saved at least $75k by buying them from DirectBuy instead of shelling out $100k at Home Depot.

Why would anyone fall for a pitch like "You have to join today, or you won't be allowed to join for 7 years. This is your only chance." ?

"Oh, in that case, please take my money! I'll worry about whether it's a good idea later."

It's no coincidence that their claims of huge savings are on products where it would be very time-consuming to compare ACTUAL prices, and not some mysterious discount from the retail price that nobody pays. Let's say you are going to get new kitchen cabinets, and you know what brand and model you want. Now what?

How many contractors are you going to call to find out what they will cost? What about installation? And when comparing to the Direct Buy price, did you remember to add their "handling fee"? And shipping charge - how can you know what that's going to be before you buy? I'll bet it isn't cheap.

I can see how this works great for Direct Buy. Push expensive products which you can't really compare prices on, and leave your customers thinking they have saved a fortune becuase they aren't factoring in the "handling fee" and shipping charges that would not be extras at a local outfit.

anyone got a 3-rd party pro direct-buy site?

I think you will be hard pressed to find one, if one is even out there.

I looked into this company as me and tghe wife are gutting our master bedroom and master bath. Also redoing almost half of the rest of the house.

As others have said they have CARZY membership fee and you don;t save anything.

I see those commercials and i'm like  too.

I don't know how much cabinets cost, but $60k seems like way too much! hell, even $30k sounds like way too much.

have to agree but the main thing is no one knows how to shop for these products. Do you really think they are getting all this stuff bypassing the normal supply chain? I know for a fact they are not. And comparison shopping at HD or Lowes will not net the same results as if you go to a wholesaler direct. Most just don't realize you can do that. They have way more room to negotiate with the housing market taking a tumble.

And who would those be. Most I have talked with want a tax number and you have to order more then just 1.

Do you know anything about remodeling?

My parents bought fully custom oak kitchen system for 15k. My brother bought full cherry for 18k.

As others have said, the prcies are ridiculous.

Crazy prices, I plan on redoing my kitchen most likely next summer and the goal is $5k or less on cabinets, counter top, sink, and flooring. I already have all new appliances. I will be doing the work myself though so that makes a difference.

10/20/2007 - Tom writes:
Just left the nearest direct buy in Rochester Hills MI - Had my wife and my kids with me. Long story short. Owner threaten to pull his gun out and "blow my head off". Called Oakland county sheriff. Filed a complaint but Sheriff said we could not do much since he did not actually blow my head off in front of my wife and kids. Need I say more!

Now THAT'S some smooth talkin' saleman!
