Really? They have one on the 5 freeway and one on the 15 freeway both of which are north of where I live in north county San Diego... probably 50 or so miles from the border. They've been there for longer than I've lived in San Diego, which is the late 1990s.

There are 32 permanent and 39 mobile.

Most are 25-75 miles inland along the US/Mexico border. A handful are within 100 miles of the Canadian border.

They've been around for ~4 decades and officially constitutional since 1976. United States v. Martinez-Fuerte, 428 U.S. 543 (1976).

They can stop everyone and ask them questions.

They cannot search without consent or probable cause, however the later has a fairly low standard in these inland checkpoint situations.
