WTH is the reason our drinking age is 21?

I know Wisconsin was one of the last to change it.

Is it only 21 to make certain you're legally liable for any stupid crap you do when you drink?

(I'm 30 btw), just curious.

I thought the national drinking age was 18 but all states raised it to 21 so they'd get government funding for highways and crap.

Am I right or wrong?

Highway funding, mostly. I remember I was in Prague when I heard Louisiana caved. We got legally plastered, knowing we wouldn't be able to legally drink when we got back (pfft, like it stopped us in NO).

Correct, at least for the last few states that held out, they did attempt to withhold the funding until those states, SD and LA caved I believe.

yeap. it was 18 but the goverment said it would withhold funding for highways (wich they had to build) if the age of drinking was not 21.

so of course every state agreed ..some took longer then others though.

Personally i think its BS. IF you can join the military and put in a situation where you have to kill or be killed at 18 you should be able to fvcking drink.

Because people can't even drink responsibly at 21+. And younger people statistically cause more accidents than older people.

haha...drinking age in Australia is 18yrs in all states except ACT(Canberra) it's 16yrs there..buts that only because polititians kids were getting busted for under age drinking so they changed the law....same goes with marijauna..it's illegal in all states except the ACT

Feds: We respect the principle of States Rights, so we're not going to pass a federal drinking age, and we're not going to demand that you raise yours.

States: Sweet!

Feds: However, if you don't do it, we're not paying for your roads anymore.

States: FVCK!

Because younger people are stupid and don't have responsibility...
If you went to college then you would know a good deal of people just fvcking around all day getting hammered and doing drugs. Happens at almost every college.
Then they go out doing some weird sh!t like running around naked or screming at stuff. With drugs anything can happen...

For having highway funding tied to the drinking age be sure to thank MADD. What the drinking age has to do with drunk driving which was already illegal at any age is beyond me but MADD was the group that pushed for that federal law.

That's why voting age was dropped to 18 back in the 70's(I think it was the 70's).
Kids were dying in Nam for a political war in which they had no voice.

The same thing happend years ago with the "national" speed limit. The fed came in and told the states to drop the limit to 55 or lose money. That has been lifted though.

it's not.

According to the site I linked, you're right. The buying\possession age is. Under certain circumstances you can drink at any age in some circumstances. When accompanied by a parent, for a religious function, etc.

I think he was just being his normal sarcastic Canadian self.

Of course it never occurred to the good moms over at MADD who passed this legislation was that it might be a better idea to raise the driving age to 18 if they didn't want their high school kids to get smeared across the roads due to their stupidity with alcohol. Heck, I keep seeing all kinds of news reports about stone cold sober high school kids getting themselves killed because they just aren't ready to deal with controlling a motor vechicle. Just make the kids ride the bus for two more years and don't crimp the style of the college kids (it's not like they aren't going to get it anyway).

I remember reading South Dakota v. Dole about the legality of the Federal gov't withholding funding from states who didn't comply with standards. The reason for the drinking age being 21 is that a large amount of young people were getting into accidents caused in large part by alcohol, so the government used it's power to regulate safety by raising the drinking age to dissuade young folks from drinking, and subsequently driving.

Why don't we set the drinking age to 18, but keep the zero-tolerance rule for driving with alcohol in your system until 21?
