WTH is the deal with Donnie Darko?

A movie that makes you go to a website to fill in the story? I'm all for movies that make you pay attention ie Memento, but Donnie Darko has huge holes in it that you can't get until you go to a website and play their flash game. The stuff in the website should have been in the movie IMO. I haven't gone through the extras on the DVD, but as the movie was originally presented it seems very incomplete.

What holes? I "got it" without the website (never been there). Plus, its a lot easier if you read the "philosophy of time travel" extra on the DVD.

Meh I was never a fan of the movie - maybe it's because it was my ex-gf's favorite

I hadn't even heard of it before until it was on cabel. I read the description and though, hey if it has an evil rabbit in it, it can't be all bad.

"Highschooler Donnie is plagued by visions of a giant evil rabbit who orders him to commit acts of violence and predicts the impending end of the world"

Did anyone see the director's cut?

It's not showing anywhere near here, of course.

Well, when I first saw it I didn't have a DVD. Lets just say it flew out of the sky like that engine! Anyways, you can get a general sense of the movie, but I doubt any of you really understood it completly the first time. How could you when you didn't know what was actually in the Philosophy of Time, or what exactly Drew and Noah's character really knew about the whole thing. There was no real way to know Jack was Donnie's sister's boyfriend, or if that was really relevant. Even the contents of Donnie's letter wasn't revealed, but spoken, so when watching the movie you don't know what that even means. Apparently Jack was the one who put the axe in the statue and wrote "they made me do it", but again, without referencing external sources, this movie is just full of holes. There was apparently a lot of depth to this story, but most of it wasn't in the movie.

Website I was referring to

I agree with Childs. I watched the movie and understood it but the website really shows a lot more depth into the story. The movie probably would have been better with the extra info but it was still a good movie nonetheless.

Way to spoil it for those who haven't watched it, foo' ;)
That said, I'm never going to watch it because of the Mad World song that bugs the hell out of me, and makes me want to go on a mad rampage, Falling Down style.

Liar! :D

Well, I don't see how. Perhaps our idea of understanding a movie completely is different. I knew in general terms how things went, but don't know why anything that happened the way it did, until I did some homework. I just had to keep telling myself things like "umm...OK. WTH is tha...well, anyways." etc.

I agree that you can probably get a much fuller experience by digging deeper into the extra material on the DVD and the website.
The same can be said for many movies.

My bad. I changed the title of the thread.

I tend to think this movie is interesting, but really, really overrated. I think some people are so entranced by the creepy environment of the film that they think it's more than it is. That said, it's something different, and I did enjoy it for the most part.

i watched it 10 times before some things started to click THEN i went to the website and was for the most part right about somethings. some i didnt even know about(didnt see relevance in the movie) but it just goes to show there was a lot more behind this movie then what was actually on screen, i wish they could have included some of it.

the guy who made donnie darko is suppose to have another movie in the works, forgot the name tho

I don't know about that! That damn "Chicago" sucked, in my opinion, and man was that over hyped!

This is my favorite movie of all time, right after I saw it 3 days ago. Watched it again yesterday. I, however, watched the Director's Cut. I heard the original didn't show any of the Philosophy of Time Travel book, which I can see why the movie would make little sense and you'd have to go online to figure it out. The director's cut definitely makes coherent sense on its own and going online just revealed things to me that were already there. I noticed a lot of things the 2nd time watching it.

On another note, I don't think this is a film for everybody... it's definitely a cult film.

Director's cut? Crap, I just bought the DVD Saturday. Oh well, at least it was only $10.
