WTH is a message telephone number?

And how is it different then my Cell or Home number?

I am filling out some applications and two of them ask me for this bit of information. I have no idea what that is. Any ideas?

Some people do not have a cell or a home number and rely on their friends/family to take a message, so that would be a message phone number.....

There are also automated answering services that act like the voice mail on a regular phone.

As explained above, it's some place that they can leave a message for you.

If that's your cell phone number, put it in.

Really not that complicated.

Isn't that just called a voice mail system?

I've always assumed 'message phone number' was what AlienCraft said.
 
I have never heard of having a seperate phone line dedicated to recieving messages. What ever happened to a message machine. You know, thing picks up, has a tape, it records what other people say? You are supposed to buy one, and stick it onto your phone line. These devices negate having to own a message telephone number, you can just use your home number!

No, not a seperate line. It's just that some people don't have a phone of their own (maybe they're living in a hostel or at relatives), so a message phone number is a place where they can call, to leave a message for you.
