WTH?! HDD Prices

So im installing linux on one of my machines, it has a 1.6gb HDD and linux complains about the size. So i ring up my local IT center and they price me a 20GB HDD @ £47. I manage to scrounge the money together get to the shop and the service guy says why dont you go to 40GB, its only 95pence more expensive. Why is a hdd that is twice the size only 95p more expensive? Someone explain to me? Oh yeah loving linux 😀 😉

Because no one wants smaller hard drives nowadays, and it's just as cheap for them to enable 40gb on a platter than 20gb on what will probably be the same platter!

You decided if you're coming to the LAN party yet?

Why is a 20GB HDD something like $70 there? I can get an 80 GB drive for < $50 after rebate in the states.

20, 40, 60 and 80 gig drives are essentially the same price in the US.

if(you.buy(drive.size<80)) System.out.println("You are a moron.");

Sorry, I'm in Java class right now.

Ill never fill the 40GB let alone 80GB, all my files are saved on a 100GB server i only wanted a small hard drive to hold the OS and program files.

It's not a tax rebate, it's a manufacturer's rebate. $84.50 (£47.95) is a ripoff for a 40 GB HD.
Heck, I just checked Newegg and they have an 80 GB 7,200 RPM WD for $75 on the front page (no rebates).

U R a MUG.

Saw 120Gb Maxtor for £39 at the weekend at a computer fair.

The same reason a 1ghz pentium CPU can cost $100. There is a demand for them since some people want to add whatever speed they can to their PC without replacing everything. There is a demand for the 20 gig drives maybe since some BIOS'es may have trouble reading anything about that.

You can get 120GB drives for £65 ($104) without any rebates. Slightly more expensive than the US, but we have more taxes.

And there is a "low limit" for HDD's I believe, ie: they can only get so cheap, because of inherent costs to make etc. Like TV's don't get that much cheaper. HDD's start at about £40 new in the UK, so the cheapest are £40, and so are the next few cheapest, there isn't much disparity in pricing nowadays.

yup. a small 20gig HD shares all the same mechanical stuff as a 200GB HD, such as the actuator head, motor, casing, etc..
