<< Apple's next Power Macs, due to be announced early next year at Macworld Expo San Francisco, will "definitely" support the USB 2.0 and 1394b connectivity specifications and the DDR SDRAM memory standard, company deep throats have told The Register.

With USB 2.0 not supported by Windows XP, providing the second-generation versions of both USB and FireWire would allow Apple to claim it's the first major PC vendor to do. And, as long-time Apple watchers know, there's little CEO Steve Jobs likes more than announcing that Apple's rolling out new technology ahead of everyone else.

USB 2.0 extends the bus' data throughput to 480Mbps from version 1.1's 12Mbps. IEEE 1394b likewise extends the bus' current speed, from 400Mbps to 800Mbps with room to drive data at up to 3.2Gbps over copper cabling. Silicon that supports USB 2.0 is already shipping; 1394b silicon from the likes of Texas Instruments, Agere, Panasonic and NEC is expected to ship in volume in Q4 - plenty of time to get it into new professional Macs early next year.

<< Earlier this week, we revealed that Motorola has finished the initial revision of the G5 and is gearing up to ship the chip at between 800MHz and 1.6GHz (lower speeds for the embedded market, higher speeds for desktop applications - ie. Power Macs). >>

OMG! If the new Motorola processor is as efficient (in terms of instructions per clock) as their current ones, the 1.6 GHz will blow anything away! With the way that Apple is using standard 'PC' components, I wonder if there'll come a time when we can custom build our MACs...

Uh oh.. I might have to start saving up for a mac. I just had my first DV + Firewire + Final Cut Pro experience the other day..... it was nice, very nice :)

The g5 is 64 bit and completely backwards compatible with the 32 bit instruction set. The pipeline increases from 7 (G4) to 10.

/. linked to an earlier register article about it.

@1.6ghz, the pipelien inrease to 10 isn't that a big deal...isn't the athlon a 10 stage?

anyway, it's about time apple starts using DDR...i remember how long it took them to start using pc133...

ah, things are looking bright in mac world...

1.6ghz???

I thought Apple's didn't need more mhz? And I thought Apple's dont need memory bandwidth? Since they already mop the floor with PC's... NO?

Singin me a new tune.... not like the old tune...

No matter how fast and efficent macs are, they don't have the software support that PC's have. If I can't use all the software and play the same games I can with a PC, what's the point?

Software support? Shiiiiiit, it's a unix based system now. They'll have more titles than anyone in about a year. Almost every company out there is supporting Mac OS X in the next year. I honestly can't wait for this computer to be released. I find it weird that they're supporting USB 2.0. I thought that is like the competition for their FireWire.

I'd consider getting a G5 mac if they would include a better video card and more ram and bring down the prices.

i dont think anyone on here who buys a computer prebuilt ever buys memory packages or video upgrades, when they can get them cheaper and install them theirselves.

the prices, is another story.

I'm sure you've all heard it before, but you can't blame Apple for their prices. With all the development and research that goes into their products they need to find some way to pay for it. Dell and PC makers don't need to research anything since they pretty much just steal designs from apple, and idea's from apple. They just buy parts and build a case.

Macs are expensive, but the money is worth it. You would upgrade your PC probably 3 times in the time you would keep one Mac, maybe even longer.
