WTFBBQM$LONGHORN

Hmm the GUI API sounds really interesting. The current API is such a pain to use.

what a shame

just looked up WinFS... sounds awesome

I came in here expecting a discussion about steak. 🙁

Also, WinFS is the big thing I was hoping for. The GUI isn't as important, but that's going to be the big thing for end-users: how pretty it looks.

Would anyone mind telling me in clear and short details what the benefits of WinFS will be? I haven't paid much attention to it and from what I saw early on it was something that made me want to avoid it.

From what I saw it would take today's file storing (where experts know exactly where the files are and the inexperienced had no clue where the files are) to a new method where no one at all knows where the files are. That looked like going from bad to worse. I've had a system for file sorting and storage that I've used for 17 years. I'd hate to have to change it now. I cannot imagine anything being more efficient for me.

Then we have the added complexity. I can just imagine the hundreds of questions I'll be asked as to how to get their computer to call their cell phone when a file is emailed to them. Then the hundreds of phone calls of how to STOP their computer form calling their cell phone... The complexity looked so bad that things would be far worse off.

Of course since I haven't paid much attention, maybe those issues have all been cleared up. So what are the benefits?

I think WinFS brought 3 things: 1) increased performance for non-linear disk access, 2) better file 'databasing' (making searches faster) and 3) better security. Of course, that's just my layman understanding of it.

Not really, this is an Anti-M$ thread and it is off topic. It's not like I am asking how to install my beta copy or.....

Blah blah blah (I have a copy too) blah blah blah

WRONG FORUM. This belongs in OS.

Well this sucks donkey balls. The only reason I was looking forward to Longhorn was the new GUI, but if it's getting the axe along with WinFS, then I see no reason to "upgrade". It seems as if Windows has gotten to the point to where they can't really add anything to the current offering, only try to make things better. This was what Avalon and WinFS were going to do, but not now.

Oh well, it is still two years away (maybe longer), so maybe it'll get thrown back in.

I like "new stuff" as much as anybody... but I like to see technological advances rather than just pretty GUI's. So the loss of WinFS seems more detrimental to me.
