i jsut got my new comp in today it has all custon gear in it and i cant get win xp to install on it. i can get as far as formatting the HD but it just wont do it, it freezes up everytime. its a 80gb Seagate barcuda SATA, i havnt used a SATA HD before so maybe thats it. i read my MOBO instructions to make sure that i put it in the right spot and it says im hooked up right. but still no install. any suggestions? PS in win xp it says this in the setup i dont know if this helps anyone.

76316 mb Disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]

I am also noticing this chirping sounds comming from the comp cant make out where it is comming from but i can hear it.

List your full specs. Is the hard drive also brand new, or did it have windows installed on it previously. Windows is obviously recognizing the hard drive. Are you trying a full format or a quick format? I would try installing with the bare minimums, 1 stick of ram, cpu/heatsink and fan, video card, 1 cd/dvd drive, and the hard drive you are attempting to install on, remove any other hard drives, cd drives, PCI cards etc. especialy if you have a creative labs sound card, since their drivers seem to cause all kinds of problems.

You say you get as far as formatting. Does it complete the format and start to install Windows, or fail in the middle of formatting?

You say you're hearing chirping noises. Chirps are not good. Chirps are the equivalent of clicking noises (many modern drives chirp instead of doing the click of death). Sounds like an electronic chime. You can determine easily if it's coming from the hard drive by waiting to see if the noise only happens wheh the drive light is on.

Download the manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic and run the advanced diagnostic test on it to see if it passes.

Let me warn you that in my experience I've also found that a cheap PSU can damage a modern SATA drive. I had 3 new SATA drives in a row do the chirp of death after a few weeks and eventually figured out it was a bad PSU.

Hope this helps...

The bad news...

I tried to do a non-quick format on it again last night before i went to bed and it failed with the error partmgr.sys, so it said to restart and try again and if it didnt work again to consult the manfacture of the HD. well i did it again after restarting and this time win XP says that the HD is damaged and does not work so i gotta call the company that i bought it from send it back and get them to send me a new one. in the mean time though i have a 160GB seagate barcuda that is IDE. i just wanted to use SATA cause i know that it is faster but im wondering if it is only good to use SATA for RAID? here are the specs for my sys.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Dual-Core 512K Per Core

OCZ 1GB PC-3200x4 for a total of 4GB of ram

Creative Audigy 2 ZS 24BIT Advanced HD Sound

ATI (Connect3D) Radeon X800 XL 256MB DDR/PCI-E/TV-Out/VGA/DVI

MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI Audio/GB-LAN/PCI-E/USB/IEEE/SATA/DDR/ATX 64 939

and a 80GB Seagate Barcuda SATA HD
