WTF? You have to pay to play tennis?

I was looking into playing tennis here in NY/Long Island. Nothing hardcore, played maybe 2 times in my life, but figured it's still a fun way to spend a day. Apparently though, in order to play at any of the tennis courts at PUBLIC parks would cost $100 per person to buy a friggin' permit here in NY. I am unaware of any free tennis courts in Long Island. Is this the case everywhere? WTF? Basketball's free, baseball's free, soccer's free etc. Why does tennis cost so much to rent the ground and a piece of net?

F-that, there were more women playing tennis at the courts I was at yesterday. 🙂

I could understand having to pay to play golf, since the amount of land needed for that sport is huge, but I don't get it for tennis.

I play free in NY, high-school courts are a good bet. If not, check around for various courts; I can think of about 5 offhand that aren't associated with a high school, are no problem to get to, and some of which are lighted to boot for that nighttime tennis goodness.

tennis courts are more than ground and a net if you didn't notice. it is paved, takes some skill to make a good court, and in fact they aren't cheap.

Yea, on long island just go to a local high school on the weekend, courts are almost always open.
Yup.

I did hear from a friend about NYC areas requiring a permit. They don't want kids on the courts or roller hockey players fugging them up (oops hehe).

Beacuase each court costs $50,000 and resurfacing is $5,000. So there is an incentive not to have kids skateboarding on the court.

There are free courts everywhere here in Ann Arbor. My girlfriend's neighborhood even has a tennis court and there's no enforcement of who can use it...any Joe Blow can walk up and start hitting balls.

There are great courts all around Tulsa, OK are free. When I played competitively I paid only $50/mo to join a tennis club with fantastic indoor and outdoor courtes, ball machines, cafe, etc.

Yea I know what you mean. Since I was little, I've played in tournaments and always had access to nice courts for free. Now that I'm not playing competitively, I have to pay $50 an hour to play. Really sucks man. There are courts though for about $300 a week unlimited which is a good deal IMHO.

Up in canada where we're all socialists, tennis courts and all other public facilities... are.. FREE!

Hahaha. Thanks for making me laugh. 😉

Courts in my area are usually a part of a planned community. Monthly homeowner's assessments usually cover the maintenance for such courts, so, in essence, we have to pay too.

However, there are free courts as part of parks and such. The only downside is that they are not maintained as well as those in our community.

Where the hell do you play that costs $50/hr? Flushing Meadows?

I never did think to check out the local high schools. Are you allowed to just go there and start playing, or is there a whole process associated with it?

I guess I'm just used to something like baseball, where, it's pretty much, first-come first serve whenever you go to a park and want to play.

Which is fine, but what I was more getting at was why at public parks, which are paid for by tax dollars, do they still cost so much to play (ie: Needing a permit)? All courts I've seen are gated. Sure kids could still enter there, but charging to play or not doesn't quite prevent that from happening.

Hell, a padlocked court, requiring a $50 deposit to play would be fine with me, since I'm not all that picky about the quality of the ground.
