I'm selling fencing. About 270 feet of rails for chain link fence, hardware, fence posts, gates, etc. Stuff I don't want since I'm doing a different type of fence.

Been emailing back and forth to a guy who forgot which ad was mine. I was thinking "uhh, when you're on craigslist, just search for it." With the concept that you probably wouldn't be searching 500 miles away from home in the back of my mind.

Nope. After several emails, he sent his phone number to have me give him a call. The guy is THREE THOUSAND miles away. No wonder he couldn't figure out which ad was mine again. I wonder if he's going to want it shipped? I could probably put at least two or three 21 foot fence sections in a box & ship it fed-ex? UPS? :p

Not UPS. There are other services that will do it for much cheaper.

Talk to your local warehouse businesses for a local directory of larger shipping options.

If you are serious enough about sending him this, take pictures and confirm the bill.

After it loads the truck, it's gravy from there.

There's no realistic way to send it cheaper than he could purchase it locally. If my price was that low, it'd sell locally in a heartbeat.

Maybe he has a second home near your farm?

Can't imagine any other reason he would want that amount of fencing, given his location.

It's kind of funny that I included the following note at the bottom of the ad:
"Scammers: feel free to email me, telling me that you'll send me an extra $200 more than I'm asking. Unlike everyone else, I won't delete your email. I'll actually agree to let you waste money on postage and waste your time. Then, I'll email back that the check was bad & put it in the shredder. I wish everyone would do the same. Postage is expensive. Scammers would go broke buying stamps. "

NOT ONE SCAMMER inquired about it.

CL complaints are worthless without a link to the ad.

Most just crosspost their crap everywhere.

1. There's no point ever linking to craigslist ads on the forums. Inevitably, the links end up going to ads that were flagged. And, there was no point quoting most of my thread anyway.

Got my first extremely interested buyer!
I really appreciate your response to my email.and am very sorry for the late respond I want you to consider it sold, pls do withdraw the advert from craigslist to avoid disturbance, anyways I don't have time to come over to take a look because of my Business schedule but you don't need to bother your self with the shipment,I'll take care of that by engaging the services of a mover, hence I'll be sending a check and it will be delivered to you via United Parcel Service,so I'll need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check....

1.Full name on the check.
2.Full Physical address to post the check
3.City, State and Zip Code
4.Home & Cell Phone to contact you.

Note that the payment will be shipped to your address via USPS NEXT DAY AIR SERVICE an and I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping i will have my mover to come over as soon as you have cashed the check.

I sent a llama's name and the address to my barn. Let's see if my llama gets rich. :p "Sorry, my phone is out of service and living in a rural area, we don't get cell service."

Why no phone number nor cell, but you'd give the address to your barn?

I normally dealt in high end network gear. It wasn't abnormal for someone to be willing to pay more than the item sold new for a quick delivery overseas even.

With fencing, the guy may have a business nationally and have a need for it.

There are a lot of scams on CL, but as a buyer especially, and also a seller there I have learned too many just assume you are a scammer then flame right away.

I was unloading a blue-print printer. It was going for about $1000-2000 in good shape. We got a common error message one day. It was supposedly only a $150 part and about a hour of simple labor to install. I listed it at $300. We wanted to upgrade to doing blueprint scanning and printing and took on a lease of a much faster piece of hardware.

I had tons of flames that I was scamming.

I have tried to buy things out of my general area and was told I had to be scamming as well.

I never was.

Some of the pieces are 21 feet long. All of it together is a few hundred pounds. Fence gates, well over a football field worth of of steel pipes, including the endzone, hardware, etc. Only a friggin idiot would want it shipped. Especially considering that it is VERY common material. (Although I have offered delivery within 75 miles for the cost of gas, provided payment is made in person - I'd just follow the person home with the material.) Even a pickup truck wouldn't work for it, unless you had a rack.

What's the price you were asking?

Fuck I was going to throw away some aluminum awnings on my house...took them down to the scrap yard in a Saturn Sedan after I sawed them up.

Made a few hundred bucks for a couple hours of time.

It was $175, dropped it to $150 though.

I never throw away scrap metal. I remember the day I was taking the old copper gutters from my house to the transfer station. I thought "hey, there's a scrap metal place on the way. Maybe I'll get enough money to pay for a dump ticket." If you could have seen the look on my face as the guy started putting $100 bills into my hand like it was nothing.

Since then, I've netted thousands by going to the scrap yard with old metal. My favorite was when I was at a city auction where they get rid of all their old stuff that no one wants. The next planned stop that morning was at the scrap yard. I purchased stuff for scrap metal for pennies on the dollar for what I received for it 30 minutes later. I'd like to say that "I laughed all the way to the bank," but spent it on something.

edit: oh, and the address of the barn, but not the cell phone number? Reason: what's the worst they can do? Send me a trial magazine subscription? I don't need someone signing me up for crap on the cell phone which requires me to waste umpteen hours on hold resolving it with some company that I didn't sign up.

what you are selling sounds like more than $150 in scrap.

Most cities know the scrap value though today and don't sell below.

The local city is filled with morons. 2 years ago at their auction, they had brand new Lenova laptops for sale. BRAND NEW in box. The current selling price of the one I picked up at the auction was close to $2500. I got it for $110. When the bidding got up to $40, the guy working for the city reminded people that "wow, I didn't think they would go this high. I need to remind you that these are being sold as-is, there's no warranty on them." Brand new, in the box.

Scrap steel isn't that high in price. I haven't checked the current market value. (I was really disappointed about 2 weeks ago that the scrap yard will not take scrap barbed wire & scrap fencing - clogs up some sort of machine & the places that actually process the stuff refuse it now. I had about a half ton worth.) But, steel's running somewhere around $160 a ton (last I knew.)
