are they doing this just because of the holidays?
all the good ones require subscription and the very few free ones absolutely suck.

nope. i have a yahoo account. this is an additional subscription. they teamed up with american greetings.

anyone know of free alternatives?

Unfortunately everything is slowly moving to payment subscriptions. So many of the things that used to be free have gone the way of the Dodo. :( Can't blame them, though as much as it sucks. You can't make much money giving everything away.
