OK, I'm sitting in front of my computer, doing my MS Access lab, when all of a sudden, I get the BSOD. Except it's not your everyday fault protection error BSOD with a paragraph long explanation. It's one sentence long and says Windows error blah blah... as short as it was, i forgot most of it and didn't think much of it since I'm thinking it's just the stupid Windows hourly crash. I try CTL-ALT-DEL, but that doesn't work (the BSOD didn't even give me an option to Ctl-Alt-Del). I go and manually hit the reset switch on the case, it displays my video card info, and then a blank screen and that's it. I'm all confused as to why it won't even POST, and that's when I smell something burning. I was like oh Sh|t, not again. I rush to turn off my comp, trying to figure out what burned. I touch the heatsink, and it's blazing hot. But the smell is emanating from the power supply.
Just a couple months ago, I fried my hard drive. WTF?

when the power supply goes, i should have absolutely no power. except i turned it on later and there's still power going to the comp. just doesn't POST.

damnit, i just got the power supply a month ago, and it's a nice 300W AMD approved PS too...

Well if your heatsink was burning hot then perhaps you fried your cpu? Was the fan still working? Is it an AMD or Intel? What speed? Is it overclocked? What kind of powersupply? We need more info!

AMD k6/2 550, heatsink unusually hot right after burn, fan still spins
amd approved 300W PS

a week ago, a continuous beep was coming from the PC speaker.
couldn't figure out what it was, so i unplugged it.
i was guessing that it was the motherboard either telling me the CPU was running at a dangerously high temp. but i couldn't tell for sure so i ignored it. stupid me.

ok, this is some weird stuff.

i just tried to boot the computer up again, and now it does POST, and even load up windows. (remember, this is hours after the initial burn).
the burnt smell is still there. i'm afraid to use it though. just wondering wut the heck is going on...

my friend sez it's probly just some dust particles that burned.

Dude, not to be overly offensive, but do you also put a piece of masking tape over the VCR clock to make it stop blinking???

Plug the @#$%^&( speaker back in and figure out what the beep means!

hehe, no offense taken. i just didn't care about this POS comp at that time. was too pissed.
yeah, i was told it's like ignoring all warning signals...

OK, got it figured out. it's the power suppy, not getting enuf juice to the computer system. something in there burned.

It's not always the power supply. I was OCing once to the point of melting-smell, comp was freezyish, so I shut down (my dad walked by, he's the one who said "something smells like it's burning..."). I set the cpu lower and booted up, no more problems occured with that system. heh.

I really think your power supply is messed up, how it got that way I can't explain.
