I just built a budget computer for a neighbor from old parts, including a Voodoo3 and an old 15" Gateway CrystalScan monitor. I'm experiencing a fscked up problem regarding refresh rates. Whenever I switch from any resolution to 640x480 (using a supported refresh rate), I get wacky refresh problems (example). But if Windows boots into 640x480, the display is fine.
For example: (using Powerstrip to change resolution and refresh rate at the same time)
- Booting to 640x480 at 72Hz: no problem
- Change to 800x600 at 72Hz: no problem
- Change back to 640x480 at 72Hz: garbled display
This causes problems, since most games default to 640x480, so if the desktop is set at 800x600, the display becomes fubar. One solution is to keep the desktop set at 640x480 at all times, but that is a little annoying since it will limit the productivity for my neighbor.
Does anybody have any idea what is going on, or know of any workarounds for this?
This is with Windows Me BTW.
