?I THINK we have a chance to get, a strong chance ... that we might get the nine or 10 votes needed for passage of the resolution and we?ll see if somebody wants to veto it,? Powell told NBC?s ?Meet the Press.?

15 members...russia, france, and china will veto, US will vote for. that leaves 11 votes remaining. out of those 11, at least 80% will vote for?!?! I wished i knew what Powell was smoking cause i would like some...

Which 8 countries will vote for?

Nice, unbiased, poll you got there... :disgust:

Where's the "US will get the votes legitimately" ? or did you decide to strategically leave that out?

LOL...no kidding. It's hard for people like xfile to accept that there are many (30+ by my count) countries that happen to agree with the U.S. position on principle. For example, Japan (a country that is far beyond the limits of America's purchasing power) just came out in support of the amended resolution.

At any rate, politics (both foreign and domestic) has always been founded on exchanges (I'll vote for your proposal if you give me _______.). There is nothing unusual or dirty about such dealings, and crudely labelling them as "bribes" is childishly naive.

As for the poll, I doubt that the U.S. will get 9 votes. Not that it really matters anyway...

I wouldn't be surprised if the resolution, or some form of it is passed.

If the resolution is voted down or vetoed, the council will lose the final illusion of relevance. Bush stated that regardless of the security council's decision, if he deemed war necessary it was going to happen. The French, Russians, Chinese et al can oppose the viewpoint all they want but they are not going to change anything. The only way war will be avoided at this point is if Saddam decides to comply... odds are that he's not going to do so.

So, if the security council comes to it's senses and wants to maintain any shred of relevance they will try to negotiate with the US and England to modify the proposed resolution (not likely that they'll budge - they don't feel the need to, the deadline may be negotiable as the US may need to wait until April 1 for the result of a possible Turkey revote) or support it as it stands.

They won't veto it. If they did and since we are going to act anyway it would basically be the end of the UN. I think they will abstain and save face relizing the US is the UN and without the US it's all over. Bush was right to force this issue now. The weather getting to hot to wear the chemical suits so another year of stalling if he did'nt.
