WTF UPS Delivered My $900 TV to My Neighbors.

After seeing the 40% off deal on ebay, I figured it would have a good time to buy a new HDTV. I come home one day to see a noticed that they attempted to deliver the TV, but I wasn't home so they delivered it to my neighbors. This, of course, caused me immediate concern because I have no clue who my neighbors are, nor how well they would hold onto a $900 37" 1080P TV for me. To make matters worse was that my neighbors weren't home all night, and I had to wait until morning to knock on their door and ask for my TV. Knocking on someone's door at 7am(I had classes most of the day so it had to be done early) and asking for a TV is probably the most awkward thing I have done in a while.

When talking with the UPS guys I was told that because it wasn't profitable to deliver something twice, they would often leave it at a neighbor's house. That's probably fine for something small or inexpensive, but a 37" TV?!?! I would much rather prefer they just keep the TV at the UPS hub so that I could come and pick it up.

How can UPS get away with this when the item was specially shipped with a signature confirmation required? Thankfully my neighbors turned out to be ethical people, but the TV just as easily could have gone missing or been damaged at a different neighbor's house.

UPS Sucks

1) I've had UPS deliver to the wrong house twice in 2 days, on accident. I used to trust all of the companies the same but UPS has dropped a few notches lately.
2) For an expensive item, you should've requested they keep it at the hub knowing you're not home most of the day. You should've done this when you found out the expected delivery date via tracking number. Call UPS and tell them "hold for pickup". It works.
3) Don't buy expensive/heavy items to be shipped. ;)

2) My roommate was supposed to pick it up, but he was passed out when the UPS guy came and the knocking didn't wake him up.
3) Find me a local place that will sell me a 37" 1080P Samsung LCD for $620 after cashback.

UPS tried to deliver a package of mine to a house in the wrong state. Someone noticed the wrong address when they attempted delivery, and that's when it was routed back to me.

Yeah, I'm losing hope in shipping lately. At least at my apartment they'll leave it at the office. They've got a locked room they keep all the packages in.

$620 after cashback and coupon on ebay.

So why do you say $900 in the OP?

That was the list price of the TV and others like it. While I did not pay that price, that's the price one would generally pay for it on ebay and other stores. The TV currently goes for $1.1k at bestbuy.com, so my price is certainly not off the mark.

I've come to terms with the fact that UPS does whatever the fuck they feel like with your packages. Play soccer with it, punch holes in it, open it and close it again, deliver it to the wrong place, not attempt to deliver it but report that they did, deliver it at 8 PM, deliver it without a signature, refuse to deliver it without a signature, leave it plain view, drop-kick it over your fence, etc. There's a clearly a mentality from the top down that it just isn't important to provide quality service to the recipient.

Fed-Ex for the fucking win. Unfortunately we don't always get a choice.

Completely opposite experience for me. FedEx packages always look like they've been run over when I get them. They're rarely on time in terms of which day I get them, and if they are they sometimes come in the evening or at night - one time I got one after 9pm

In contrast UPS hasn't merely been adequate for me but exceptional. Boxes always look pristine & untouched and arrive on time or earlier - their 2-3 day for me is usually 2 days. I also find their website more intuitive and their tracking system better all around.

AND they're cheaper. UPS is win-win.

Fed Ex refused to leave a package that the contents were <$20 on my door after I signed the slip, called and requested, and left a note.

The Fed Ex shipping hub for my area is over an hour away and the lady on Fed Ex help refused to change the delivery instructions as she said I had to drive 70-80 miles to get the package if I wanted it. Now the package was shipped back and the overstock.com company is refusing reimbursement. Thanks Fed Ex for not delivering a christmas present. I gladly pay double the rates to not use your services.

They are not supposed to do this. It is against the rules.
Report the driver. No telling how many other things he decides to leave at neighbors because he is lazy.

The driver should have left a tag on the door that he tried to deliver and you would need to call them for a proper delivery/pickup.

Never had that problem before, as I have always lived in a major urban area with a hub less than 15min away. Still, unless I'm in a gated community or in the middle of nowhere rural America I'd prefer that they just hold onto the package for me regardless of value. The risk of having the box stolen is just too great in most urban settings.

I always use a commercial address now. UPS/Fedex seem to fuck up often when using a residential address. Sucks for people that cant have packages delivered to their work place.

I'm SOL for the package I guess. I'm sure there is some kind of legal action I could take, but it would be time consuming and probably expensive. Maybe UPS would feel bad and reimburse me, but I doubt it.

You need to read UPS and FedEx's terms. Leaving packages with neighbors with signature required is acceptable. Direct signature is where someone at the delivery address must sign for it.
