WTF!.... UPS... + brokerage + Tax = Stinks.... WTF is going on.... NEED HELP!!!

Ok, I got this video card from my friend (he lives in U.S and I live in Canada). He sent it by UPS. Now I just got the package, but it says I have to pay extra $60CDN... what the fvck...... tax and the brokerage...
but this was a gift though.. why the hell are they charging the tax and brokerage...?

UPS is horrible with brokerage...your friend should have shipped FedEx.

Best thing is to ship it through the post office. There's usually no extra fees you have to pay.

Yea right. To get Xmas gifts from Canada delivered into the USA took 3 phonecalls, 2 faxes and 4 forms to fill out and then they tried charging us $42. A homemade cross-stich needed a textile form filled out. A chili bowl since its a "food item" had to go through Food and Drug. No way we will ever use Fedex again.

your friend should've either shipped it by the mail (for ground level service) or shipped it by air (UPS includes brokerage in air price, as does Fedex)

I think you would've been OK if your friend had declared it as a gift, which he didn't, and now you're screwd... They had to do the work to clear it for customs so they charged you for it.

my friend said that he DID declare it as GIFT.
But somehow they still charge TAX....
I mean like I said already.. it is a USED part.. how could they possibly charge TAX on it?

There you go, if he had declared $20 or under you would have been fine for taxes, but screwed as far as getting insurance.

It is a catch 22 situation.

I know, I have been there. I under-insured a new Plextor 12x10x32 scsi burner at $50 (cost $200usd) and it got lost. I only get $50 back

BTW, if you dont plan on paying for it, the shipment gets sent back to the shipper. Since he's already paid for it under standard shipping he wont get his money back.

He should have used international expedited or express. Brokerage fees are INCLUDED in all expedited or above shipments.

Nope, not at all. I was instructed by the buyer to undervalue.

There are ways around it, I ship thousands of $$ worth of stuff to Canada all the time and they go through just fine. But you always walk that fine line.....

If I start to make bigger shipments I will end up driving into Canada to ship it.

Here's my .02. I've sent about 30 shipments to Canada and other international customers this year. Every declaration has the price paid to me listed as the value. Why?

If customs decides to check the shipment and look it up, and they find that you have knowingly underdeclared the value by a significant amount, you run the risk of getting into a lot of fines and a lot of trouble. For me, thats just not worth it. I dont know about you, but an international incident isnt really on my "to do" list.

I believe they deliver it and give you a bill for the $$. Can someone confirm this...

Yes, UPS sometimes does that. For smaller waybills I've had to pay it onsite. Whereas before when the amount was over ~$30 they'd send me a bill. Seems as the way they do it now is the charge your CC onsite. Not always the case. STAY AWAY FROM UPS.

My AE at UPS told me that the brokerage esentially makes the package COD. (lots of acronyms there).

AFAIK, UPS Brokerage lays out however much $ it takes to get the package into the country. I was under the impression that the Canadian Government dosent let any package across the border without the taxes paid for first. UPS pays out to the Canadians and deliver the package, and they recoup the money that they initially paid out (duty) plus their brokerage fee (i think its about $30 USD) upon delivery. Under that methodology, if you dont pay the duty then, they dont deliver the package.

lol, we'll see about this. UPS didn't rip you off, son. Read the fine print next time. Also, tell the guy you bought the vid card from that he should ship through the Post Office or FedEx/UPS AIR.
