It gets about 90% done and then I get an "Assertion failed" critical error with something about codecs etc. WTF?

PIII 600 laptop with 256 MB RAM in Windows 2000 and ATI Rage 128. DVD-ROM drive.

This is not a copy. I bought it today. And I made sure the disc was clean.
 
i dont know if its the video card. if it were, i dont think he would have problems until he was in the game. since your problem occurs during installation, it might be a software issue with win2K.
 
This probably has nothing to do with it, but I'll share it anyways. I remember having issues with UT in win2k. When the game starts, it does a cd check. My cd-drive failed 50% of the time with that test, whereas in Win98, it flew through the cd check.

You might want to test the cd in win98 to make sure...
 
Copy protection IS SUCK!

Yeah, I think it's their damn CD protection because that's apparently an issue with some games and DVD-ROM/CDRW drives. I even tried copying the CD to the hard drive first and then installing. Nope. It still screws up. In fact, just the damn install program is the first app I've come across for my laptop that will hard crash Windows 2000.

Well, unfortunately, this laptop only has Windows 2000 on it, and I bought this CD specifically for the laptop.

The downloaded demo works 100% fine.
 
Well, I installed in on my PC, and it was fine.

So I left the CD-ROM in my PC drive, mapped the drive to my laptop, and then installed it over the network. Worked like a charm. The best part is that this version is No CD (4.32). When did that happen? 4.30? I haven't played in a while.

And now that I have GOTY edition, I'll have to say don't bother. It's not worth the extra 15 bux if you have broadband and you're short on dough. As far as I can tell, all it is is the standard Unreal Tournament with a couple of extra splash screens, Inoxx and Rocket Arena and Chaos. But the last two are not even in the main install. So basically you're paying the extra bux just to save on download headache (which is fine for me).

Anything else I'm missing? These instructions are pretty sparse as far as the installation goes.
 
In MY opinion, UT GOTYE is a worthwhile purchase for one simple reason: UT is the best game! I have been an avid FPS since the days of Wolfenstein and I can say that I can't quit playing UT. I have had the game for over 1 year and many others have came and gone. I am WILLING to support the makers of UT because it has brought so much fun to my computer. What's $15 to someone who pays $XXX for a new video card?

By the way, UT's Tactical Operations is my favorite mod and I wish it would have made it to the GOTYE, because I think many may be missing out....
 
Well, I agree. I can't be bothered to burn an extra disc for all the extra downloaded mods. I was just saying for the student types to save their money and buy the usual version for $15 less.

I had just thought maybe there were a few extra surprises on the disc, but there aren't.

Too bad they didn't stick DM-Bathroom on it. Not that it's the greatest map, but it's visually impressive, and just about every second server has a version of it nowadays.
